Cyber security has attracted a lot of attention among individuals and institutions alike in recent years. Cyber security refers to the protection of the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive information and systems from digital attacks and threats (von Solms & von Solms, 2018). It involves protecting systems and information linked to the internet because cybercriminals use the internet to attack cyberspace. Cyber security is an important part of risk management that protects individuals and institutions from cyber risk exposure. An example of cyber security is the use of firewalls to secure a private network from attacks via the internet. The firewall blocks any unauthorized access to the private network, thus protecting the network and all the information within that network.
The internet has increased access to information. This increased interconnectedness has increased vulnerabilities over the internet. Cybercriminals are using the internet as a tool to attack and illegally access information and systems (von Solms & von Solms, 2018). This has driven the need for cybersecurity in recent years. There is also an increasing need to protect digital assets from the ever-growing cyber threats, and many institutions have been forced to embrace cyber security. In addition, governments have increased regulation in cyberspace to enhance privacy and intellectual property rights. The need to comply with regulations has driven the need for cybersecurity in most industries (Zeadally et al., 2020).
The threat of cyber threats and attacks has evolved, and as such, cyber security also needs to evolve. As Zeadally et al. (2020) reveal, cybercriminals have become more sophisticated in their attacks, rendering traditional cyber security approaches a bit useless or insufficient. There is a need for industry changes to respond to this sophistication. For instance, there will be increased use of deep learning to create more sophisticated cyber security approaches (Zeadally et al., 2020). In terms of career opportunities, there will be many opportunities in the application of artificial intelligence and blockchains in the cyber security field.
