Dear family,
I hope you are all doing great. Words can't express how much I miss you. I am forever grateful for the motivation and inspiration you've instilled in me that has led me to this great country, the U.S., in pursuit of my education. A lot has been happening lately in the U.S. following the turbulent electoral process preceded by the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. has been popular around the globe for all sorts of reasons and I have decided to pen this letter to enlighten you on some interesting facts about the U.S., particularly regarding the fundamentals of the government.
Oftentimes, you hear a lot of praise for the U.S. Constitution from all over the world, especially from the countries that look up to the U.S. Well, those praises are dead on target, notwithstanding the confrontation from a limited few. The U.S. Constitution is one of the oldest, most powerful, and surprisingly, the shortest constitution of a modern government. It was ratified in 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Bodenhamer, 2018). The formally recognized government document forms the basis of government, laws, and acts as a protector of vital human rights. The different arms of government stipulated by the Constitution form a system of checks and balances to ensure the separation of powers. Federalism is also an important aspect of the U.S. Constitution, ensuring the division of power between the state and federal governments. The document is also quite difficult to amend, thus the minority groups are guaranteed protection against despotism. Furthermore, the Constitution forms the basis of the ideals associated with the U.S. Republicanism, social contract, and limited government are a few of the foundations of the U.S. democracy.
Prominent leaders in the contemporary era of the U.S. have had to mention these two terms quite often in the recent past: justice and democracy. They are the embodiments of American institutions and make up the country’s ideologies alongside equality and freedom. The U.S. is known to have a highly mature democracy as well as an efficient justice system. There has been a myriad of definitions for the term democracy, but to put it in simple terms, it refers to a system of governance in which the supreme power is enthroned upon the people, and they freely exercise these powers through a free and fair election. Justice, on the other hand, is a term familiar to many and coined to the phrase that represents America's Pledge of Allegiance.
