Hello to you all, class of 2021. 2020 has been a year of many challenges. We have had to withstand a great pandemic that has affected every country in the world. But, this does not mean that learning cannot continue. It has, and we have seen students adapt to new learning approaches. As a high school student, I did not have the experience you have had for the last few months. But, I believe that in a way, it has helped you become better learners. You have been able to adapt rapidly, which is key in our ever-changing world.
As I have seen from other younger high students, you have been engaged in online sessions as the country experiences the corona pandemic. This is a great privilege that other students from around the world do not have. The advanced state of our country in terms of technology allows us to have sufficient and efficient digital tools. So, feel proud to belong to such a country. Do not take the experience of virtual learning as an imposition. It is not. If anything, it is the future of education and many more daily activities. By attending class through zoom sessions, you have already become an advanced being. You will take this knowledge and experience with you when you join college.
Now, I know that several of you have missed other high school programs such as sports, prom, and homecoming. Trust me; if I were here, I would miss these activities the same way you do. But, You shouldn’t let this worry you. Your core business here is getting an education. Everything else is secondary. Therefore, do not dwell on what you are missing. Instead, focus on maximizing on whatever you have access to. Your teachers have been available all through. Make use of this opportunity to expand your classroom knowledge. Read ahead of your zoom classes so that you have questions to ask. Trust me; you will achieve much more this way. Furthermore, you have time on your side now.
Senior year is here, and given all that has happened in the past year, this is not how you might have envisioned it. It would help if you took courage in the fact that you are becoming a student of higher learning. I know that several of you have always looked forward to their senior year so they can maximize their high school stay. But, the truth is that this might not happen. You can try and make it happen on your own, but I can assure you the experience will not be the same. So, focus on directing your energies elsewhere.
