Formalism is the study of art based solely on an analysis of its form. It describes the critical position that the most important aspect of a work of art is its formation. That is, the way it is made and its purely visual aspects rather than its narrative content or its relationship to the visual world. In painting, therefore, a formalist critic focuses exclusively on the qualities of color, form, line, and composition. These elements constitute the fundamental language used by formalist to examine and analyze the work of art.
