Project Proposal (Social Media Privacy) Social Research Proposal
4-5 pages
Use MLA Format
For your final major assignment, you'll be writing a 4-5 page written proposal, bringing together the bits and pieces of your writing and research into one context to create a well-supported and convincing proposal.
The Audience and Purpose
The audience for your proposal is an organization or group that would be interested enough in your topic to support it, for instance, providing space to hold an event, volunteers to help, funds to complete a project, or permission to include a link on their website to your social media. The following are a few more examples of the kinds of audiences to whom students have written
To a board of directors of a community center proposing that the community center allow the student to hold an event
To a administrator asking permission to distribute brochures
To the city council requesting the opportunity to present information that could influence policy
To a professor proposing a final project, a research paper
To an arts grant-awarding committee requesting funds to produce a video
The Structure
The written proposal will consist of 5 major parts:
1. The Introduction: Introduce the General Topic, using two or more appeals.
2. The Problem: Narrow the focus identifying a more specific underlying issue related to the larger problem
3. The Project and Project Plan: Provide details about your project, when, where, what, and how it will be organized. Include a method for evaluating the project's success.
4. Implications: Consider what it is you hope to accomplish in carrying out the plan. Who will benefit from and what are the benefits to carrying out your plan?
5. Remember to include a final page with your Works Cited or References list. Also remember to include parenthetical in-text citations.

The Project Proposal
June 19, 2012
To: A proposal written to Provo Health Department administrator. I am asking for permission to distribute brochures specifically to Family and Community Health Division.
Introduction:
Diabetes affects more than 20 million Americans; over 40 million have been diagnosed with diabetes Type 2. My own father forms part of those 20 million people living with diabetes, he has withstood the disease for more than ten years. Countless drugs, tests and exams; this is my father’s daily experience. The question that I ask myself is: are there better ways to treat such illnesses in a manner that is less aggressive or invasive? CAM or Complementary and Alternative Medicine seems to be the best answer to my questions, the various forms of alternative medicine could be help people deal with chronic disease or even serve as a preventive measure for the coming generations.
In the book Guide to Alternative Medicine author Fontanine Karent states, “With the exception of conditions that require surgery, herbs can be used to treat almost any condition”. Herbs are often prescribed in complex mixtures and tend not to be used as isolated components, such as extractions from the parent plant. CAM practitioners believe that the healing benefits of herbs result from the synergistic interactions of the all the components of the plant. Herbs are used in the following ways: antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer. Herbs are also used to treat pain, aid digestion, and lower cholesterol, treat colds and flu, increase resistance to disease, enhances immune function, improve circulation, regulate menstruation, and increase energy” (2). In her book, Karant provides specific examples of how CAM can be used for the benefit of patients suffering from a wide spectrum of diseases; she also mentions that due to CAM’s diversity, the same natural components can be used to treat different cases. How many people have any knowledge of the many benefits CAM has to offer? There is a lack of credibility. Unfortunately this is the biggest problem that CAM faces; there are not many sources of information or education. Yet knowledge of CAM is necessary to guide possible users of Complementary and Alternative Medicine to choose the method that best suits their health needs.
Project:
In Adams’ article Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Pregnancy published in the Australian Traditional Medicine Society Journal in 2011, Adams explains the main concepts surrounding the use of CAM to aid pregnant women. The article introduces statistical instances that demonstrate elevated uses of CAM. “Research indicating that more than two thirds (68%) of Australians have used at least one CAM, and a similar number (64%) had visited CAM practitioners, over 12 month period. According to Adams, more and more young adults are interested in the use of CAM, and an increased level of education allows people to explore new alternatives for healing and a higher economic status makes unconventional procedures much more accessible. This suggests that information about CAM allows for more people to become inclined towards the use of these methods. I am convinced that the distribution of brochures could inform and educate, giving the public a new option for treating illness. To make information more available to people disillusioned by traditional treatiments, I propose to create and distribute brochures and make these available to clients of the Provo Health Department as one more way to support your mission to heal the community.
The Project Plan:
My project will take place at the Provo Health Department: Family and Community Health Division. Provo Health Department’s hours of service begin at 8:00 am through 5:00 pm. I plan to use two hours in the morning and two in the afternoon to issue brochures. The schedule proposed is two days a week, Monday and Friday. The main objective of the project is to reach the community, specifically young adults, pregnant women and older citizens in hopes of waking interest, and expansion of knowledge concern with CAM. I plan to measure the effectiveness of the project by tracking the number of brochures that are distributed.
The Implications:
By being directly involved with CAM, as a consequence of my father’s illness and concerned with the suffering of many more who face this and worse disease, I’ve hunted for new and better remedies. I believe, and I am interested in knowing more about CAM and its formal practices myself. In the beginning of my project, I believed CAM to be only the use of natural drugs and foods, but through my research I realized that CAM also involves complementary therapy like yoga, massage, aromatherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic, etc. It’s information like this that leads me to believe that it’s important to inform and educate people about the benefits of Complementary and Alternative Medication, its benefits, its roots and the boundless possibilities it provides.

Project Proposal
To: Utah County Recorder
Introduction:
“If people are fine with how things are going, they usually don’t turn out. They don’t turn out until they’re ticked.” – Jane Doe, Orem City Recorder’s office, in reference to Orem City voter turnout.
I am formerly a Romanian citizen. I have lived in a country where the people had no voice in government matters. Since becoming an American citizen, I am extremely interested in the American voting system and the apathy I see in the American voting public. The quote I listed above has been my experience in all politics. In Romania, when the people had finally had enough, they overthrew the country’s dictator and changed everything. When the first election was held after his fall, the Romanian government reported that more than 90% of the country voted. While I am not suggesting something so extreme occur here in America, I am wondering how we can make the American public feel just as enthusiastic about participating in our elections. I’m hoping we can find a way to do so, without people having to be ticked. I am asking you for help.
Problem:
In America, most of the registered voters are not voting. I met with Jane Doe from the Orem City Recorder’s office. Jane told me “The average year to year turnout is 16% in Orem.” She further stated that the amount only doubles in a year that there is a Presidential election. She also called this turnout “pathetic”. I agree – the American voting public needs to come out in greater numbers and exert their voting right. Also, municipal elections affect each individual voter much more personally than national voting. I feel we need to change the status quo. If people will become educated I believe they’ll become inspired to participate for the personal and community good.
Project:
In reading the article “Engaging the Unengaged Vote: Vote Centers and Voter Turnout” (487), I liked their idea of taking voting polls to the people. I thought this might be one of the reasons voter turnout is so low –it is difficult to get to voting locations. When I met with Jane Doe, I suggested the idea of bringing the polls to the people. However, she made it clear to me that this would not be feasible in Orem because of the way the city is divided. She also stated your office, Utah County Recorder might not want to part with your protected voter information and she also indicated that this might lead to an increase in voter fraud.
It occurred to me that another problem, maybe a greater problem, was the lack of voting education provided to the average voter. If they could be more informed on where to go, when to vote, how to vote, and who best represented what they wanted to vote for, maybe voters would get more involved. In brainstorming the best way to get the information out there, I thought of our online world today. Information is power. I want to create a place where information is accurate and neutral. I believe a blog would be a great source. In order for the blog to be successful, I am asking for your help in providing me with the needed information. Information I am looking for would include what you put into voter guides, voting locations, statistics, hours, etc. I am asking you to provide me the information you have and also give me permission to use that information.
The Project Plan:
I have registered the domain name oremneutralzone.blogspot.com.
This site is under construction but will be updated any time new information is available from you, the sponsor. (Utah County Recorder)
This blog will be available 24/7, year round.
This blog will be specific to Orem City elections.
The content will include poll locations, times, candidate information, etc.
The blog will include a traffic counter to observe the number of viewers.
Effectiveness will be measured by whether or not voter turnout increases.
Implications:
I believe that by building this blog and promoting pertinent information, we can increase the turnout of registered voters. Even if the turnout only increases by 1-2%, I would consider it a success. It’s important for people to understand the issues and the importance of exercising our rights that others fought and died for. People need to be reminded of the role they can play in their own future. I believe that using social media and the internet is the way to reach today’s voting public. If we have the power and the tools to create a better city, we should do so. There doesn’t have to be a cost - information is free. By educating the public and increasing voter turnout, we can change Orem City for the better, one vote at a time.

Proposal: Social Media Privacy
Introduction
Every time I see news about data breaches or anything that touches on social media privacy, I always find myself worried about the things I share on social media. I am a person who shares a lot on social media. I use social media to share photos with friends, chat with my friends and family members, and post my thoughts on certain ideas. However, news on data breaches and social media privacy always leaves me paranoid. I always ask myself how much I have shared and how this data could be used against me. Currently, billions of people have social media accounts and to organizations out there, this represents large amounts of data that needs to be mined. Social media platforms have been at fault for sharing this data with other organizations. In his article, Alex Hern from the Guardian reports that “Facebook gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read and even delete users’ private messages.” This is shocking owing to the fact that a majority of the users whose data is shared do not give consent to either Facebook or any other social media platform.
The Problem
In spite of the many stories surrounding the issue of social media privacy, people appear to still be using social media platforms to share personal information about themselves, their families, and their friends. A research conducted by Consumers International (9) reported that their results “showed that 63% of people agree that connected devices are creepy in the way they collect data about people and their behaviors.” However, as Rani Mola writes, in spite of this fact, people are still buying these devices “which – through an array of cameras, microphones, and other sensors – have intimate access to our lives.” So, this forces to ask whether people understand the repercussions of having these devices or sharing their private information.
Do we understand how this data is being used to target us with certain information? Are we aware of the weight of the topic of privacy or we are simply comfortable with letting these platforms have control of our data. Perrin and Anderson reported that the use of Facebook did not change even at the height of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. So, this means that people lack the understanding of how crucial this data being mined from their profiles is. The problem, therefore, lies in people’s ignorance in the privacy terms social media platforms have. Additionally, people are not aware of how they can address their online privacy concerns using VPN and other tools to help prevent companies from tracking their IP address or accessing their browsing history. It is thus crucial that people are made aware of the repercussions of sharing private information on social media and hence this proposal.
Project
The article titled Tips for protecting your social media privacy from the antivirus company Norton offers a good starting point. In this article, several tips are provided to anyone interested in protecting their digital footprint from preys. The article makes one think and reflect on the information one shares on the internet. It notes “this information – some...
