Social Media Influencers in Fashion Consumption among Teenagers
Research Project Overview
This document gives an overview of the research process that we will conduct this semester. Each of the following will have detailed separate instructions as we go, but this document should help you understand the direction for the rest of the course.
Your project will be composed of three parts: 1. Proposal (your idea for research) 2. Final Written Portion 3. Creative Pop Culture Artifact
You will: 1. Choose a social issue, such as: a. Gender, Race, Class, War, Violence, Justice, Poverty, Science/ Environmentalism, Education, etc. b. The social issue should be complex and offer a variety of viewpoints from which to conduct research.
2. Next, choose a pop culture form in which you see your issue at work, such as: a. Film, Photography, TV ads, video games, music videos, TV programs, Sports, Fashion, etc. b. The form you choose should have a long history so that you will be able to find research on it. c. Topics must be approved before you begin research. I do have one topic that is already off-limits: "violence in video games" This topic has been discussed exhaustively and is not an option for this course.
Please note that your project this semester is not a traditional essay. While it includes writing and research, it also includes multiple images, as well as the creation of visual or audio content that will be embedded with the text. You will be composing a project, rather than writing an essay.
3. Once your topic is approved, you will research the History of your issue as it appears in that pop culture form: a. The historical perspective will function as your project introduction and some of the essay body. b. It need not present an argument but will instead focus on the development (chronology) of the issue in the pop culture form. c. The purpose of this section is to describe the PAST. d. You should use at least three written sources and two images sources in this section.
4. Then, you will research Current Trends for your issue in the pop culture form you chose. a. The Current Trends section will be most of the body of the essay. b. This section will describe what is happening TODAY. c. You will explain how and why the issue appears differently than in the past. If it is not different, you will explain why. d. You should use at least two written sources and two image sources in this section.
5. Then, you will create your own Pop Culture Artifact that will be embedded within the written portion. a. This artifact is part of your contribution to the conversation on your topic. It will appear in the body of the essay. b. The artifact's form is your choice. Some ideas: a digital or paper collage; a cartoon; an original song/lyrics; a video trailer; a short game or code for a game; a detailed map, chart, diagram, or graph, etc. c. Whatever you choose to do, the artifact must be created by you because it represents your interpretation of the issue. You may be asked to present evidence that the artifact is your creation, so please keep any drafts.
6. Alongside your artifact, you will write a Rationale. a. This part of the project does not contain research. It is your personal description and will appear in the body of the essay. b. The Rationale explains WHY you chose that type of artifact to create. c. It will be personal opinion and explain why you think this issue needed to be represented in the form you chose and how your artifact participates in the current conversation about your issue.
7. Finally, you will write a section called What's Next? a. This section will be your conclusion. It will not contain research. b. This section looks to the FUTURE and describes what you think needs to be done regarding the representation of your issue in pop culture. c. In this section, you will write an argument. You will give advice, make suggestions, or predict future trends/icons. d. You will support your argument by drawing conclusions based on the information presented in the introduction and body of the essay.
8. At the end of the project, you will include a Works Cited page, formatted in MLA style, which lists all nine of your sources (5 print; 4 images/media).
The final project will use subheadings that look like this:
History Current Trends Rationale [with Artifact embedded] What's Next? Works Cited
We will work through the different sections of this project together, but you can ask questions about any part at any time. More details will be given on each part as we go.

The Impact of Social Media Influencers in Fashion Consumption among Teenagers and Young Adults
Introduction
Fashion has been embedded in the development of human societies for a long time. Conventionally, the appeal of fashion to the psychological and physical needs of individuals across the globe has led to the development of a multibillion-dollar industry that draws from different cultural aspects to appeal to consumers. What we wear is of critical importance in expressing their cultural values and interests. Fashionable clothing has been a definitive aspect of different generations, religions, personalities, and other factors that define human behavior. Additionally, females and males present varying fashion tastes, which is one of the key highlights in the differences between the genders (Giovannini, Sarah, Xu, and Thomas 23). Many companies that include small-scale producers and multinationals have emerged seeking to dominate a particular market niche where they can be dominant. This is attributed to the fact that fashion is substantially competitive, premised on the fact that fashion often defines the way of life.
In a globalized world, companies that appeal to the majority set fashion trends. Subsequently, marketing strategies are imperative to how the companies reach a larger audience and increase their customer base. The competitiveness in the fashion industry has influenced innovative strategies that are used by both small-scale and large-scale businesses. This is reflected by the use of traditional marketing strategies such as television adverts as well as the exploitation of new opportunities presented by the advancement of social networking via internet-based platforms. Companies have in the past, relied on public figures and celebrities such as athletes and actors to market their products.
Technological advancements have led to the development of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram, which facilitates effective marketing solutions compared to traditional marketing strategies (Wilska and Terhi-Anna 445). Social media influencers have become key players in the achievements made in the fashion industry (Nelson, Michelle, and McLeod 515). Investigating the role of influencers in how companies market their products offer an opportunity to understand their implications for...
