The modern world is in an era of instant communication, thanks to technological advancements that are being witnessed across the globe. This postmodern world which is being ruled by computerized devices and the internet has witnessed transformations in all sectors of the economy. Currently, anyone in any remote corner of the world can get any content be it music, books, films or any artistic world from anywhere. These has been possible due to the new distribution channels which have emerged with these technological advancements. They have changed the manner in which any information can be communicated among individuals across the world. However, although these advancements have eased communication in both cost and time among individuals, they pose a significant threat to copyrights. The new and advanced communication channels depend on copyrighted products hence vulnerable to piracy if necessary precautions are not taken.
Piracy can be simply defined as the illegal breaching of copyrights by copying, recording, sharing or even downloading any artistic work without the permission of the owners who are mostly authors, artists, and production companies. Therefore, copyrights were created to protect the expression of ideas. However, despite the existence of copyright laws and acts across the world, piracy is getting to higher levels due to the improved channels of communication.
Therefore, in this paper, I intend to pursue the whole concept of piracy as well as copyrights. Secondly, I will also attempt to establish the factors leading to piracy intentions considering its effects to the economy. The study will largely draw from the Theory of Planned Behavior because of its association with attitudes as well as actions that create a particular behaviour of people (Ajzen, 2006).
