Please organize with something puzzling in China’s political, economic, or social experience at some time in the latter half of the twentieth century or the first two decades of the present century. That puzzle will be expressed in a “why question,” which will be substantiated by qualitative or quantitative evidence. Students will develop an answer to that “why question,” which will be the argument of the paper, including further evidence to support that argument.
You may change the "why" question in my opening paragraph.

Chinese Economic Reform and the Socialist Market Economy “Falling behind means to get beaten.” The famous saying that had been deeply imprinted in every Chinese people’s mind reveals the long-lasting dilemma from the late Qing Dynasty to the twentieth century. After the Chinese Communist Party had defeated the Nationalist Party and established its power in 1949, China was implemented by a planned economy as the essential feature of the communism under Mao Zedong’s rule. Planned economy system investment and the allocation of capital goods take place according to economy-wide economic and production plans. After Mao’s death in 1976, Deng Xiaoping took over the power and started his profound economic reform. Why did Deng choose to change the planned economy to the socialist market economy? Why and how can it save China? This paper will discuss the feasibility of the socialist market economy and the process of its improvement to suit China’s national condition.
The change of planned economy into a socialist market economy by Deng was fuelled by the need to solve the needs of people who lived in the countryside. At that time over 80 percent of the Chinese population lived in rural areasDeng argued, no matter how intense the city economy was, it would not mean a thing if it didn't trickle down to rural areas. Out of this need, the Chinese economy policies were changed invigorating the economy and adopting open policies in rural China.
