The governments use this information to perform a wide range of functions including collecting revenues, maintaining law and order, and also providing and enhancing different social welfare programs. Consequently, the democratic states juggle between the uses of this personal information with the provisions of the guiding principles and laws. Primarily, these guiding principles and laws demand that the government be open and accountable to its citizens. Besides, they outline the legal safeguarding of individual privacy (Pieters, 2017).
Over half of the American populations are worried about the risks to their personal privacy. And another 70% have not only lost control over how their personal information is spread but also how it is used by various institutions. The ubiquity of computers, as well as the computerized collection of data, obviously makes part of these concerns.
