How would you propose to do so using qualitative methods?
To settle for a qualitative method, the aim of the study must be inductive. For example, why don’t men who are victims of domestic abuse not report their abusers? The only way to find out the reasons the men do not report their abusers is to ask them. It is likely that each one of them will have different reasons as to why they do not report their abusers. The nature of the topic necessitates that the study be conducted in a way that allows the researcher to ask open ended questions. The respondents can answer the questions and it is upon the researcher to find out the common theme emerging from the answers.
Procedure:
Sampling
First, find a number of respondents would be recruited using purposive sampling technique. Since not all men are abused by their spouses, and not all men who are abused report their abusers, you must find the ones who have been abused and did not report. This is the reason for purposive sampling which employs a certain level of my judgement to only focus on the respondents who have the characteristics I desire. To avoid huge costs of interviewing all respondents, a total number of 20 respondents would be chosen. Small number of respondents have an inherent bias factor and hence 20 respondents seems to be a reasonable number.
Data Collection
Secondly, the preferred method of collecting data is interviews. All interviewees must give consent for the study. All the respondents will be asked the same questions and the interviews will be recorded. Since the questions are open ended, it is expected that the participants can express themselves freely and the researcher can discuss the answers with the respondents. The researcher can ask follow up questions and clarification from the interviewee. Open ended questionnaires can be mailed to respondents but they only need to be used only the researcher cannot physically or electronically reach the respondent. If telephone or teleconferencing calls can be arranged, they’d be better than mailed questionnaires.
Data Processing and Analysis
All the recorded interviews are transcribed. If the interviews were in different language they also need to be translated. The researcher has to listen to the recordings or read the transcriptions severally to deduce the emerging patterns and themes. The identified themes will be considered the main findings. The most illustrative quotes (quotations /responses) from the interviews/questionnaires are extracted and used to support main points that emerge from the data.
How would you propose to do using quantitative methods?
Methodologies are dictated by the knowledge gap. If the knowledge gap is statistical, numerical or can be quantified, then quantitative approach is the best approach. Gender inequality researchers attempting to find out the differences in pay gap, time spend doing household or unpaid work, etc, usually use quantitative research methodology.
