Natural disasters comprise metrological or geological events occurring on a large scale and result in extensive loss of life and property. Disaster management is critical for ensuring that the right measures are undertaken in the mitigation, response and recovery phases. Existing literature shows that in most cases, those responsible for disaster management often put more emphasis on the response and recovery phases than the mitigation and preparedness phases. Consequently, outcomes of unnecessary loss of lives and property are not uncommon. It follows that effective management of natural disasters must incorporate all the phases involved so that the right structures and resources are put in place to be better prepared to deal with natural disasters.
