Brief Introduction
Since its commercial birth, gaming has bloomed into one of the most profitable world entertainment industries. Most modern homes today worldwide have electronic games to entertain family and friends in comfort (Watkins, 2020). Usually, most people put the games on computers, television or built-in screens with handheld machines. Every video game lover has their favorite game ranging from role-playing games, simulation games to adventure games.
Similar to drug and alcohol abuse, video games have captured the minds of many people that have led to compulsive or uncontrolled gaming. Watkins (2020) explains that through the years, video game addiction has become a real problem for many people since they use it as an escape from reality. They end up spending many hours every day playing their favorite game that makes them ignore family, friends as well as their needs. Through playing Massively Multiplayer Online games (MMOs), individuals reach a level of interaction that in real life would have made them nervous. They also engage in role-playing games where they can become the person they want to be without fear of rejection or failure. Video games have become so addictive because each game is challenging enough to keep a player coming back for more.
Context
Although video games are the most popular and common forms of entertainment in recent times, it causes gaming disorder which is a mental health condition. Video gaming can cause eye problems that stem from the fixed and extensive staring at the video screen that causes the eyes to strain. Frequent straining may also lead to headaches, vomiting, nausea, and dizziness. Besides, the lack of physical activity during gaming leads to obesity and overweight. Researchers found that since most gamers spend long hours in front of the screens, they disregard proper diet and increasingly eat junk food confirms (Ayenigbara 2018). They also found that regardless of appetite, food intake was high amongst players. Therefore, video game addicts are prone to poor mental health. There is need for further research on how the issue can be curbed.
