Individual Teacher/Action Research Proposal

 

This project requires you to apply the concepts and methodology we have explored in readings and class discussions to the development of a teacher/ action research project that you can carry out in your classroom/school setting in the spring during your teacher practicum.

 

Your final project for this class is the written plan accompanied by a brief reference list related to the topic of your study.  This written plan is due the last week of class and will be presented orally in class.  Your proposed project should enable you to gain clarity, insight, and understanding about some aspect of your practice through the collection and analysis of data.

 

You are not required to actually carry out the plan, but my hope is that you will develop a project that you will be motivated to (and be able to) conduct in the spring and that will lead to improvement of your role as an educator—that is, a plan that will foster improvement in some aspect of teaching and learning in your individual context.  Your final proposal will address the four questions described below.

 

Question 1: What is my research interest? (1-2 pages)  What is the percentage of schools that integrate technology into teaching, and how they use technology in the classroom setting. This is my action research question

In this section, you are to discuss and justify your area of interest and specific question for your action research project.  Why is this aspect of teaching/education important for you to study?  What experiences have you had that led you to focus on this area?  What evidence do you have that this is an important issue/problem to explore using action research?  What is the context in which this research will be carried out? In other words, why are you interested in this particular study?  What commitments/experiences contribute to your concern about this topic?  You should conclude this section with a specific statement of the problem you wish to study, or the aspect of your work you wish to explore—as well as what you hope to learn more about as a result of your action research.

 

Question 2: What do I already know, and what do others know about this topic? (2-3 pages) I will attach the Articles

Your own experiences and reflection help you formulate the action research plan and provide you with some knowledge about this issue.  For this question, you are expected to demonstrate that you have thought more fully about the issue using, at a minimum, three articles related to your project.  (You are also welcome to interview an instructor or fellow student who has some knowledge on your subject to count as one of your sources). You should incorporate these sources into a unified narrative that demonstrates that you have broadened your understanding of the topic.  Be sure to integrate the responses from the interview with the articles.  This reading/interviewing should help build the rationale for your action research plan.  Be sure to connect what you are learning to your own experiences/existing knowledge.  Use APA style in the following example when referencing the articles. (See the APA handout on SOCS for support on this).

 

Question 3: What will I try out? (or, What action will I take?) (2-3 pages)

This section contains the action plan.  Describe the plan fully. What will you do?  What data will you collect?  Remember that most action research is not experimental, but rather it is exploratory and represents an inquiry into one’s own practice.  Include a timeline for collecting and analyzing data.  Be sure to answer the following questions:

  • What will you do or take action on?
  • What kind(s) of data will you collect and why? How often?
  • Who will be involved and why?
  • What is the setting in which you will carry out your plan and collect data?
  • What are your plans for analyzing the data?
  • What do you need to do specifically to make this project happen, that is, to implement it?
  • How will you ensure that your judgments are trustworthy, credible, and respectful?

 

Question 4: What comes next?

Ultimately, what do you hope to achieve/learn by implementing your project?  What do you anticipate will happen?  How do you think the project will move your pedagogy forward?  Whom will you share your findings/results/products with?

 

Paper Formatting

The final proposal should be a 10 pages double-spaced paper. A short reference list should also be included using APA format.

Following rapid technological advancement, use of technology has been integrated within the education sector in different ways. For instance, many curriculums require that students use calculators and other programmable mathematic solving applications within their computers. Therefore, these students find it difficult to master some of the basic in mathematics such as formulas because they are integrating within their devices as revealed by Firmin and Genesi (2013). Likewise, many of learning institutions have enforced the use of video lecturing as a learning tool. This is the scenario where students take their lesson through video and audio lecturing recorded by their lecturers. The process allows students to take their lessons without seeing their lecturers physically but through recorded video lecturing or video conferencing. It is also through the use of technology that many lecturers find it easy to communicate with their students through various social sites such as facebook and twitter (Wang et al, 2012). For instance, in case a tutor will not be able to make it for class on any given day, in most cases, they communicate to their students through the use of class social sites.
Another use of technology in the classroom is through interaction of students among themselves. Through the use technology, students find it easy to communicate and interact among them through having online class discussion or in passing any important message to their colleagues (Samra, 2013). Therefore, communication has been made easy within classrooms without interruptions that may be a result through physical movement by students in the class.
