Problem Statement
In the last few week, I have observed that the gym has remained closed. I understand that it is a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the virus. The company has a moral duty to protect the health of each of its workers hence the directive to close the gym. The company is also requiring only a fraction of the workforce to report to the workplace. In some cases, the interaction and seating arrangement is also changed to ensure social distancing. If the environment in the office is tightly controlled to curb the spread of the virus, it is a no-brainer that company has closed the gym.
Proposed Solution While the reasons to close the gym are apparent, I believe that it should be opened. I believe it is possible to open the gym without risking the health of the workers. New directives can be put out to ensure social distancing around the facility and prevent person to person spread of coronavirus. For example, all employees can be directed to sanitize all the equipment they have touched before and after use. Secondly, only a specified number of people can be allowed into the facility at any given time. The ventilation can also be improved to ensure free circulation of air at all times. Thirdly, some of the equipment can be relocated to an open space rather than in the gym. The gym can be left to house only the electronic equipment and the rest can be relocated to a more ventilated space.
Benefits

The human resource department can come up with measures to ensure that the facility can be accessible to employees without endangering their lives. For example, the HR department can give directives to ensure that all the gym equipment is sanitized regularly, there is a free flow of clean air into the facility, and there is a mechanism to control the number of individuals who use the facility at any time. Taking such precautionary measures can allow the facility to be opened without the threat of the spread of covid.
Secondly, opening the gym has far more advantages that outweigh the likely dangers of closing it to the workforce. Studies have shown that gym in the workplace helps reduce absenteeism and leads to a healthier workforce.
