There are 3 response papers that will be an important part of your grade;
These will be given a grade out of 10 points. For each paper you will need to answer comprehensively a question
(you will have a choice of 4 questions) about materials and concepts you learned about in the lecture or from your
reading assignments; to analyze the fragment from the assigned texts or to provide a comparison between different
texts or cultural concepts. The paper should be a minimum of 2 pages and a maximum of 3 pages long. You will
need to submit your paper on Canvas before the given deadline. Required format: 12-pt Times New Roman,
double (2) interlinear space, 1” Normal margins. You also should include your first and your last name on the top of
the first page of the paper.

The sixth book of Homer’s Odyssey includes a famous simile that compares the young princess Nausicaa at play with her maids to Artemis among her nymphs (Od. 6.112-121), a simile at once appropriate to the young girl and significant for the trajectory of the plot of the Odyssey. This simile is the model for the comparisons of Medea to Artemis in the third book of Apollonius’ poem (Jason and the Argonauts 3.1139-51) and Vergil’s comparison of Dido to Diana at Aeneid 1. 498-504. In what ways do the differences from the original respond to the similes’ new contexts?
2. Vergil’s description of Dido’s psychological distress at Aeneid 4.522-553 is closely modeled on.Jason and the Argonauts 3.987-1053. The Aeneid includes a number of relationships that illustrate pietas (“devotion”), prominently, but not only, between sons and fathers (so e.g. Acncas/Anchiscs, Lausus/Mczcntius), between friends (Palias/Aeneas), and between siblings (Jutuma/Tumus). What arc some of the main features of pietas? How does Vergil achieve an idealization of this particularly Augustan virtue?

Jason in Jason and the Argonauts is often compared to other epic heroes and found wanting. How does Jason compare with Aeneas? What are some of the characteristics the two heroes have in common? In what ways are they different? Is Aeneas a more effective hero?
There are many heroes in Greek mythology. One such hero is Hercules whose tales have made him the most beloved of all the Greek heroes. Movies have been released and stories have been written as accounts of the life of Hercules. However, this paper seeks to debunk the heroism of Jason and Aeneas. Both men have come under heavy criticism because their heroic acts are not seen by many as heroic. First of all, it is crucial to understand the meaning of the word hero in Greek mythology. A hero can be defined as a person who has a lot of strength, is of great courage, and skilled. A hero like Hercules is well known for his strength, courage, and skill in war. Jason and Aeneas are also men who at some point showed a great deal of strength and did thing that made them heroes in some people’s eyes. When put side by side, one is inclined to consider Aeneas as a more effective hero than Jason. Even though Jason did not have some of the privileges Aeneas had, he fails to match Aeneas in several key areas as will be shown in this article. Additionally, it should be noted that the word hero in the context of this paper will be considered from the point of courageous acts, leadership, and duty.
One characteristic that these two heroes have in common is that they were both resilient. Jason had a tough upbringing but this did not deter him from dreaming or pursuing his goals. At some point in his youth, Jason decided to reclaim his father’s kingdom. However, Pelias was seated on the throne and his condition to vacate the throne was for Jason to retrieve the golden fleece. This was an impossible endeavor but Jason’s resiliency made it possible for him to welcome the danger. Aeneas, on the other hand, was also a resilient man. At some point, his belief in his destiny appears to come out strongly. “Here for the first time he took heart to hope / For safety, and to trust his destiny more / Even in affliction” (1.612-14). Well, these are not words of a person who cowers at the initial sign of danger. Aeneas was ready to fight and this is a statement that showcase his resiliency.
The second thing that Aeneas and Jason have in common is the fact that they both receive a lot of help in doing the heroic acts that are assigned to their names. For Jason, there is Hera who first makes sure he earns her favor and then uses this favor to act...
