Despite the increase in the number of women working, advertising have not changed the way they portray women. Most advertisements show women as almost exclusively as homemakers or sex objects. Interestingly, men are portrayed as intelligent enough not to perform the simple action like cleaning; instead, men are supposed to run the world and hold big positions in the society. This is different from the everyday activities women are engaged in. Most women are in top positions but are not reflected in most advertisements.
In one of the classic TV commercial for the Wisk detergent, it shows a man on a cruise. The man is approached by a female cruise director who tags his collar but when the lady spots ring around the collar, she recoil and feels disgusted. Like another advertisement, this is one of them that portray women as possessed with cleanliness and cleaning products, that is why they worry about ring around the collar.
Anything that mentioned cleanliness, women are associated with it more than men because of our traditions. Until recently, most women have been engaged in housework themselves, making the issues of sharing role between women and men a rare practice.
