The Institution of Marriage in the USA. How It Has Changed
The marriage institution in the United States has progressively been weakened over a span of four decades, based on a report released in 2009 by a panel of scholars and advocates (McCarthy). The US marriage index (a survey conducted seeking to quantify the condition of marriage in the United States), showed a tremendous decline in the period between 1970 and 2008. The Country’s nuptial union scores stand at 76.2 and 60.3 respectively (McCarthy). Nearly 90% of children were born to married parents in 1970; in 2008, it was 60 %. 78.6% Adults between the ages 20 and 54were married in 1970, compared with 57.2 % in 2008. The drop from 77.4% in 1970 to 61.2% in 2008 of a portion of first marriages that remained intact was also observed (McCarthy).
The state of marriages in the US is ever-changing in unanticipated ways. Report by TIME/Pew illustrates how age and income alter our chances of happiness in marriages. The wedding ceremony of the 20th century, in 1981, celebrated a nuptial union that turned out enormously broken. It terminated as badly as a relationship can: divorce, scandal, and ultimately, death and global lamentation (Luscombe). Research conducted by Pew Research center in collaboration with TIME established that marriage, whatever its spiritual, or social symbolic appeal, is not as necessary as it used to be. Neither men nor women want to be married to have sex or companionship or professional achievement or reverence or even children; yet marriage remains respected and desired(Luscombe).
The marriage institution has been thought to be going obsolete by many Americans. A poll carried out by TIME in 1978, a time when divorce rate was much higher compared to today, revealed a 28% of Americans who thought marriage was becoming obsolete. Since then, we have witnessed that famous imperial marriage and the entrance of Divorce Court. Community has turned into Modern Family (consisting of 3 children, an adopted Vietnamese baby, gay uncles, a grandpa’ with a Colombian2nd wife and a dorky stepchild) and Family Ties (nuclear family with three kids). Some political marriages have survived unexpectedly (Bill and Hillary Clinton), and others arbitrarily fade (Al and Tipper Gore) (Luscombe).
The marriage institution in the US has been almost entirely redefined. Theproblem is to reinvent marriage as an organization founded on the dependency that is not by design related to gender. Both partners must gain considerably from their coming together, and equally must face high exit costs for ending it (Nock). In the new families set, none of the essential features of normative marriage is likely to alter except the gender! Norms about who heads the family. Husbands and wives are now acquainted with this new model of marriage; even we do not admit it. Husbands are still primary source of income, but so are wives. While occupation does not naturally exclude a wife's dependence on her husband, it does mean that husbands are also dependent on wives.
