Introduction
The process of immigrants assimilation, involves the immigration groups being required to change their culture and adopt the lifestyle of the country they are currently living. The tension is always high, when immigrants enter a new country, as they try to adapt to the new environment and the people around and still hold on to their original culture. The process of adaptation could be quick or slow depending on the group’s culture. Enforcement of new language, education or worshipping is termed as forced assimilation. Hence it is the right of each individual to continue observing their religion, culture and laws anywhere they decide to live.
Background
Every ethnic group has their own traditional cultures and first language. In the early 1800s, immigrants were forced to adopt to the lifestyle of United States. They were required to know about the American culture for them to be able to understand the law and obey it. In America there were believes that allowing the immigrant in their country, rob them of their history. This led to some conditions being created in order for the immigrants to be allowed in America. First, the immigrants had to accept English as the National language (Obinna, 35). By speaking English as the first language, one however remains emotionally attached to their second language which has been replaced and individual identity will be lost. Secondly, the law required every citizen whether native or immigrant to take pride in the American identity by believing in their liberal democratic principles. This is not right since it will be robbing an individual of his original identity because most of the time an individual will be concentrating on adopting in the new environment thus forgetting about their originality.
An individual should have the freedom to make decisions without being limited or feeling forced. In the case of intermarrying, an individual should be allowed to make a decision of being loyal to his culture without changing to the identity of those they get married to. The Exogamy without Assimilation, entails an individual to intermarry but still remain to his own culture while the Exogamy with Assimilation is whereby both parties take on the ethnic group of the other. This is an important decision to make since the couple will raise their kids in a new created culture, because both parties have different views due to their different back grounds.
