Research a Particular Ethnic Subculture in American Society: Hispanic Americans
A subculture is a minor culture that distinguishes itself from a superior one. The subculture usually has somewhat similar and at the same time different characteristics when matched with the superior culture of a particular region. In America for instance, as much as all the citizens gravitate towards the belief in freedom of speech, growth, liberty, equality and so on, these citizens still differ on other fronts such as language, family values, food and orientation towards education. This difference comes because of the different subcultures and different origins. Subcultures in America include the Hispanics, the Africans, and the Asians though the African Americans and the Hispanics are the majority. This paper puts special focus on the Hispanic American subculture. The Hispanic subculture needs to be understood because it is the largest minority group in America. There is, therefore, the need to develop a greater understanding of the families, religion, language and the culture of the Spanish Americans as well as their contribution to the American society.
The Hispanic or Latino or Spanish are all one people descending from the Spanish colonization that occurred over 500 years ago in the United States. Evidence of the indigenous roots of the Hispanic people is little known in the United States. The first landing by a European into America was by the Spaniard Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 at La Florida. Within three decades of arrival, the Spanish explored settled and created permanent settlements in the United States mostly in Florida. Today, it is common to walk down the city streets and hear Spanish being spoken. From 1950 to today, the population of Spanish-speaking residents has risen from 4 million to 45 million. Fifty percent of the Spanish speakers have origins in Mexico while the other half emanates from other countries such as Colombia the Dominican Republic and other Spanish-speaking countries ADDIN CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "DOI" : "10.1353/csd.2007.0005", "ISSN" : "1543-3382", "abstract" : "Although scholars have examined historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in terms of their educational effectiveness for African American students compared to predominantly white institutions (PWIs), there is a lack of similar research on Hispanic students at Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) and PWIs. This study uses data from the 2003 administration of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to investigate whether HSIs appear to serve Hispanic students in similar ways that HBCUs serve African American students. The results suggest that the average Hispanic senior at an HSI looks quite similar to the average Hispanic senior at a PWI in terms of engagement, satisfaction with college, and gains in overall development, in contrast to the results for African American seniors who are more engaged at HBCUs than PWIs.
