Historical Event Paper
Research a historical event which pertains to modern group relations as related to one or more groups discussed in class (social class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, body type, immigration, and/or criminal history). Discuss ways that this event effected group relationships, power, and/or life chances and outcomes. Describe the event, and the status of the group/s you will discuss before and after this event, as well as any effect from this event we may still see today.
• Must use 3-5 sources (only one may be from the course readings)
• 1 source must be a scholarly source (peer-reviewed, and from an academic publication)
• Must include a bibliography and appropriate in-text citations
News Analysis Paper
Analyze 6 newspaper/web articles which discuss a single course related topic (social class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, body type, immigration, and/or criminal history). Compare the way that these different sources discuss the same topic. Are there patterns in the coverage that you see? For example: do conservative-leaning publications cover the #MeToo movement differently than liberal-leaning publications? Do publication which target a younger audience cover immigration differently than those which target an older audience? Is there an “old media” vs “new media” difference in coverage of police killing civilians? Is the coverage of your issue largely the same across sources?

Interview paper with first and second-generation immigrants
Conduct 3 twenty-minute interviews with immigrants to the United States. At least one interview must be a first-generation immigrant, meaning a person who was born outside of the Unites States and immigrated here. At least one must be with a second-generation immigrant, meaning that their parents were born outside of the US. (the third interview can be either first-generation or second-generation). Ask your interviewees about their country of origin, their childhood circumstances, what prompted their or their parent’s decision to immigrate, when they immigrated, how they or their parents were able to make the journey, and the support they received upon arrival. Then ask them about their opportunities (educational and employment) and their potential experiences with discrimination and inequality. Compare the experiences of first-generation and second generation immigrants.
Legal Research Paper
Choose a piece of legislation which relates to diversity as we have discussed in class (social class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, body type, immigration, and/or criminal history). Discuss this legislation and how it affected group inequality and group power. First, describe the intent of the legislation and historical events which prompted it. Then discuss how and why it effected group inequality in the US. Examples could include Jim Crow Laws, various immigration legislation, Title IX, the Patriot Act, the 2008 financial bailout, and others. Discuss who, if anyone, benefited from this legislation, and who, if anyone, the legislated targeted, disempowered or disadvantaged.

Media Content Analysis Paper
This paper aims to examine the ways that groups are portrayed on television. Choose a single group which we have discussed in class (social class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, body type, immigration, and/or criminal history). Watch 8 television shows which all have a character in the group you will examine. Give a brief overview of these shows and their intended audiences. Discuss the way the group you are examining is represented. Compare and contrast the particular shows you watched in terms of these portrayals. How do they challenge or reinforce existing stereo types? How could these portrayal challenge or reinforce group inequality?

A HISTORICAL EVENT PAPER: 9/11 Attack and its Effect on Middle Easterners
Introduction
For the past decades, the target of people’s discrimination and racism are those who, in the general opinion of many, doesn’t belong to any civilized society and are prejudiced because of their physical attributes and skin color. It is of common knowledge that it took many, many years and great struggles before African-Americans are finally accepted into the inner circles of the American society. It took many hardships with violent conflicts along the way before African-Americans are considered as equals of the White Americans. Nowadays, especially in the wake of the 9/11 attack, the new object of discrimination, racism, and stereotyping of many American people are the Middle Easterners—the Arabs and the Muslims.
The 9/11 Attack
The 9/11 attack which took almost 3,000 lives in an instant took place on 11th of September 2001. Here, 19 militants connected with al-Qaeda, an Islamic Extremist group, hijacked four (4) airplanes. The worst scenario is the executed suicide attacks where two of the planes flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the third plane hit the Pentagon, and the fourth one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. This incident instigated the U. S. initiatives to “combat terrorism” (Bergen 2001; History.com Editors 2010).
The 9/11 Attack Effects on Middle Easterners
According to Culcasi and Gokmen (2011), the geographical imagining of Middle Easterners, Arabs, and Muslims by the American society has often been derogatory, and though such imagining has different origins, meanings or consequences, it has contributed to the general idea that these kinds of people are considered dangerous (p.82).
Culcasi and Gokmen (2011) stated that the imaginings of the American society of Middle Easterners, Arabs and Muslims as dangerous and backward people could be traced back to American Orientalism (p. 85). Accordingly, American geographical imaginings of the Orient have been, for the larger part, based on abstractions and impressions and never on direct experiences with the people (Culcasi & Gokmen 86). The aggression carried out by the said terrorist group on September 11 only increase the already unfavorable impression of the Americans regarding Middle Easterners, Arabs, and Muslims. After the 9/11 attack, American Orientalist discourses have the tendency to associate terrorism with Middle Easterners, Arabs, and Muslims, and consequently the words ‘Islam, ’Muslim’ or ‘Middle East no longer denotes only religion, its believers or the region of its origin but is also now associated with a much far-reaching imaginings of violence and danger (Culcasi & Gokmen 86).
