WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1 Since the founding of the country, the United States has wrestled with balancing national interests with state interests. The system of federalism we have today is rooted in the Constitution, but the balance between national and state power has varied over history. Some people today believe that more power should be given to the states while other people argue for a stronger role for the national government and a limit to state autonomy. In this essay, you will analyze both sides of this argument and discuss how this debate relates to current political issues and conflicts.
1) Briefly discuss the current state of American federalism. What type of federalism do we have today? 2) What are the arguments made by those who support states’ rights? In other words, what are the reasons given for why more power and discretion at the state level is best for the country?
3) What are the arguments made by those who support a strong role for national government? In other words, what are the reasons given for why centralizing power at the national level is best for the country?
4) Based on these arguments (and using the list of policies provided below), which one policy area is most the appropriate for the national government to control? Why? Which one policy area is the most appropriate to be controlled by the states? Why?
Policy choices: - Immigration - Health care - Education - Minimum wage - Assistance to the poor - Gun laws

Currently, the United States has a new federalism, which allows the state to have some power, while recognizing the federal government as being the highest power. New federalism is a response to the assertion that the national government had much power, moreover, somewhat overtook some of the roles played by the state governments. Most importantly, the new federalism is founded on the principle of devolution. Devolution is a system where there is power sharing between the national and state government. In this regard, the national government leaves some of its responsibilities, mainly those that are not as critical to the state government (Zarvodynik 106).
When it comes to state and national governments, people hold different views. While some people advocate that state governments should have more power and discretion, others feel that, the national government should have more power. Those supporting this claim that, being near to the people, state governments are in a position to provide the services to the people (Gertson 46). However, those objecting suggest that, such a move may result in conflicts between the national and state governments. Still, there is a perception that the national government may become obsolete; thus, not needed. Nonetheless, supporters feel that, the national government sh...
