Ethnographic paper By the end of the course, you will write an ethnographic paper (1200-1500 words)—turning an anthropological lens on your own experiences and observations. You will draw on concepts and approaches from at least one reading from the course and/or your collective reading list, to write an ethnographic reflection on an experience from your life. Reflect on what "knowledge" means in this experience and how it was produced. This is anthropological writing, so the topic can be virtually anything—the toolkit and approach you use should be anthropological. Your paper will be evaluated based on the degree to which it is compelling, convincing, and engaged with concepts from anthropologists we have read. We will prepare for the final paper over the course of the summer session by doing in-class writing activities and workshopping papers within your collective. Hopefully by the end of the class, you will have written a piece of ethnographic writing that you are proud and excited to share with others—something you might publish, put into the world, or further develop into a long-term research project after the class is over. Before the final draft is due at the end of the class, you will turn in two drafts of your paper: a first draft, which your classmates will help you develop and push further; and a second draft, which your classmates will help you copyedit and proofread. These first two drafts of your paper will be graded primarily based on completion.

Introduction
China is today one of the most influential countries in the world owing to its rapid economic growth and development over the past few decades. The nation is currently competing against the United States for both economic and political superiority in the world and thus making it a source of a wide range of study topics for scholars. The country’s communist ideologies, upon which lays the foundation for its tremendous growth and development, provokes or rather invites scrutiny and analysis of the nation’s socio-cultural, political, and economic structures. Among the socio-cultural aspects of the Chinese society that make for such studies include the family structure, which is deemed as the most important and strong institutions in the Asian country. Like other nations around the world, the family unit forms the background upon which forms the country’s political, economic, and cultural principles and ideologies. The cultural identity of the nation builds around the Chinese family unit and structure as it serves to instill the nation’s collective qualities for national development. A comprehensive analysis and research on the Chinese family structure and its underlying features, provided herein, serves to create an understanding of the sacred institution. The centrality of the family unit cannot be overstated in Chinese society and countries around the world. The influence of the institution of family and its structural organization further serves to enhance the understanding of a nation’s identity across the social, political, economic and cultural aspects. Provided herein is an overview of some of the key tenets of Chinese family structure as observed from one of the families in the country.
Chinese Family
As stated earlier, the family unit or institution plays an integral role in Chinese society. The country’s communist ideologies stem from the centrality of the family unit through which the nation’s identity forms and develops for the overall benefit of the nation. The political ideology of the nation, for instance, thrives on the strength of the support network instilled through the institution of the family CITATION Zan17 \l 1033 (Zang). In essence, the family unit provides a sense of belonging and identity, which reflects the nation’s strong sense of self-belief and independence CITATION Che15 \l 1033 (Cheng). It is at the family level that individuals build their collective independence as they rely on the sacred unit for support. Consequently, the family units create a support network for individuals within a given community and thus strengthening the nation’s communist identity. However, understanding the support network and structure of the Chinese family institution calls for an analysis of the origin of the guiding principles upon which the entity forms.
Traditionally, the Chinese family unit forms around the Confucian principles or concept upon which lays the foundation of the institution.
