Description of the agency
California Highway Patrol (CHP) enforces laws in the United States in the State of California. It acts as the State police and has the patrol jurisdiction over all the California highways. The California Highway Patrol came into creation through an act of the legislature in 1949 (Chp.ca.gov, 2015). The law allowed the authorities, Highway Patrol, to implement laws in the county and State main roads; this is currently in force alongside other responsibilities. The primary mission of the CHP is to manage and regulate the traffic to achieve safe, lawful, and efficient use of the transportation system.
The Role of the Agency
The CHP has particular authority over all the State routes of California inclusive of the freeways and expressways, United States Highways, the Highways Interstate and all roads of the community and in the counties. The California State police investigate and enforce laws of traffic in the incorporated towns, besides helping in enforcing other state laws in the State. CHP protect the buildings belonging to the State and a number of places where there is a probability of terrorist attacks. It also offers body-guarding to government officials besides assisting in offering expert help to places where disasters occur, for example, the New Orleans after the outcome of the Hurricane Katarina.
The Different Assignments Available For Employees of the Agency
The uniformed police officers of the CHP provide law enforcement, regular patrols, and they respond to calls. They spend most of their time responding to calls and doing paperwork in the office. At the scene of accidents, they direct traffic, in case of reported burglary or crime, officers’ task is to carry out investigations. They have first aid skills which they can offer to accident victims. Community policing is another assignment offered by the CHP that assists the neighborhoods to fight crime.
