Birth Rates in the U.S
The US is currently the third most populated country among the industrialized countries, with a population of 291 million after China and India. The country’s fertility rate is higher than most other developed countries. To prove this, the birth rate in my family is equally high; in our family, we are twelve children, three boys, and nine girls. This demonstrates the higher birth rates in the country.
In the US, approximately four million births occur annually as compared to the 2.4 million death witnessed. This can be translated to mean that a total of 1.6 million people are born every year in the country, according to the US census statistics. The US population is estimated to be growing at 3.3 million people annually.
Initially, between 1972 and1980, the US fertility dropped to less than the replacement level fertility and by 2002 fertility had further dropped. This is because of high infant mortality. By then, the replacement level of fertility was 2.1 children per woman. In the 1980s, women gave birth to fewer children; most families on an average had two children that were not enough to replace the population. In 2002, the birth rate increased to 3 percent as compared to 1991. This was the first increment in a decade.
Currently, the unwanted births or unintended in the US is approximately 400,000 per year, making the population grow by 12 percent annually. Owing to t...
