Introduction
Immigration refers to the movement of an individual from one country to another, in a permanent basis (Enrico and Lowell 82). Immigration is a concept that is widely debated and talked about. Immigration has distinct advantages and disadvantages. The process is associated with economic gains to the host country (Enrico and Lowell 85). In addition, immigration increases cultural diversity (Hatton and Leigh 396). The standards of living of immigrants and their families are elevated. Nonetheless, the number of immigrants in the US is increasing. Some of these immigrants come to America without permission, and others do not contribute to the society. This paper seeks to defend these benefits of immigration, and discuss the various policies and initiatives needed in making the whole process a success. There is a need to better the border systems, and encourage immigration in the right way.
Economic gains
Immigration has many economic gains. Most immigrants tend to be natural entrepreneurs, establishing businesses and companies (Francesca and Neumark 1120). In the past six years, the federal budget deficit has surpassed 1 trillion dollars. Ever since the imposition of stricter rules on immigration, the US has lost over a 100 million jobs (Francesca and Neumark 1118). So as to experience sufficient economic growth, there is a need to admit more immigrants and issue green cards.
Immigration creates jobs for the US citizens. Highly educated and well-trained foreign workers are productive and inventive. The expanded work forces increase the flexibility of business. This allows companies to quickly adopt with the changing demands. In addition, larger labor forces attributed to immigration encourage job-specialization. The labor productivity increases as companies adjust to the increased work force.
There is a section of people who may argue that immigrants take on jobs and lower down wages (Francesca and Neumark 1120). It is a known fact that immigration may decrease the wages of the least skilled workers. Nonetheless, these are the last jobs that the government should strive to protect. In addition, the work force, like the economy, is a dynamic pie. Therefore, there is creation of better jobs even for the least skilled workers. Hence, there is the evolvement of an expanding economic mix, where the benefits increase with time. Additionally, the jobs immigrants take, are the jobs which most citizens in the US would not prefer to take. When immigrants fill up these jobs, the load of consumers and producers is lightened. This leads to positive outcomes in gains in the economic welfare.
