Introduction
Informal settlements have been cited as one of the key hindrances in most countries. This is especially for third world countries where almost very city has a large section living in informal settlements. Better known as slums, informal settlements consist of houses that more often fall below the required standards. In addition, there is congestion of people as the life there is generally more affordable. As they seek to catch with Millennium Development Goals, countries are now addressing the issue of slums (Imparato, p.27). However, they face myriad of challenges that make it difficult to eliminate slums and replace them with formal settlements. This discussion delves into some of the challenges faced in dealing with the issue of slums.
Origin of Slums
Slums originate from an influx of the population in large citizens. Movement of people to urban areas from the countryside large numbers results to high population. This is in search of employments and other activities that will generate income. Unfortunately, with the high cost of living, some people cannot afford to match up to the standards and have to resort into cheaper living standards. This leads to the development of slums (Karam, p.96).
Challenges
One of the challenges of dealing with slums is lack of alternative housing solutions. More often as governments seek to upgrade the housing in the slum area, they face the challenge of an alternative relocation (Imparato, p.47). For the upgrading of slum housing to be done successfully, it would mean that the people living there must be relocated elsewhere. This is not easy considering that the people in these areas are large in number.
