Guidelines for RESEARCH PAPER

*** You may submit a draft of your book report at least 1 week prior to the due date for the professor to read and give suggestions for improvement ***

  1. A.    Structure and Minimum Requirements:
    1. At least 7-full pages; double spaced.
    2. Cover page is not included in 7 pages.
    3. Double-spaced, “Times New Roman,” and “12-point font.”
    4. Title. For example, “Religious Pluralism in the Qur’an.”
    5. Cite at least 5 academic sources (books or academic articles).

--The Qur’an or our textbook will not be considered a source.

--Any information on the internet will not be considered a source, such as Wikipedia, blogs, forum discussions, comments, etc.

  1. Whenever you quote from a source (books, articles, internet, etc.), use proper citations. Citations are required even when you are paraphrasing sentences/ideas from other sources. Otherwise, it is plagiarism and punishable by a failing grade for the course and report to the university for appropriate disciplinary action. As a general rule, whenever you are using somebody else’s opinions as if they are your own, it is plagiarism. When in doubt, use citations. There is nothing wrong with using as many citations as necessary.
  2. It is preferred that you use the MLA style. However, you may use APA or Chicago formats too. Whichever style you choose, use it consistently for the entire paper (do not switch from one style to another).
  3. Include a “bibliography” page at the end of your paper. Bibliography page is not counted as one of the 7 pages.
  4. Make sure to submit your paper as a hardcopy on time. If you cannot come to the class on the due date, arrange a friend to bring it to class or my office.
  5. B.     Content:
    1. Your paper must include an introduction and conclusion.
    2. Make sure that you clearly state your main thesis/argument in the introduction. In fact, you can start your paper as the following: “In this paper, I argue that….”).

***An Argument is a sentence you can say “right” or “wrong” to. Consider the following examples:

--In this paper, I will describe (or analyze/talk about/write about/ touch upon/focus) the historical development of Sufism. This is NOT AN ARGUMENT.

--In this paper, I argue that Sufism has appropriated many elements from outside sources during its historical development. This is AN ARGUMENT.

  1. Structure your paper around your argument. Do not switch to irrelevant topics/points. Your whole paper must be a coherent whole in itself.
  2. Make sure to use paragraphs appropriately. Avoid using too short or too long paragraphs. For every new idea, start a new paragraph and make sure that your paragraph presents a coherent structure in itself.
  3. Research paper is not a book report. You are using the 5 sources to substantiate your argument, not to summarize each source one after another.
  4. Include as much critical analyses/comments/insights as possible. Your analyses, comments, insights must be no less than 2 pages, at least.
  5. When you are writing about a topic where there are multiple opinions/interpretation/conclusions, try to include minimum of these multiple approaches in your paper. For example, if you are writing about “Religious Justification of Veiling in Islam,” try to include the opinions/reasons of those who argue that veiling is “religiously required” and those who argue that it is not. Then, you can present your own argument with sufficient reasons, sources, and analyses. Ignoring different approaches is BAD SCHOLARSHIP.
  6. C.    Grammar
    1. Pay attention to grammar, spelling, and punctuation. If possible, before submitting your paper, have a native speaker read it.
    2. Never use an author’s first name only unless s/he is your friend.
    3. Please pay attention to the following common mistakes:

                        --Difference between: they/they’re

                        --Difference between: its/it’s; his/he’s

                        --Difference between: lead/led

                        --Difference between: one’s/ones

                        --Difference between man/men; woman/women

                        --Difference between ‘’/’

                        --Difference between ‘/ ’

                        --Differences among Islam/Muslim/Islamic

  1. Be extra careful especially when using technical terms, names, and words from other languages. For example, do not make the following common mistakes:

                        --Quran (wrong), Qur’an (correct)

                        --Alfarabi, AlFarabi (wrong), Al-Farabi (correct)

                        --Mutezilite, Mu’tezilite (wrong); Mu‘tezilite (correct)

Introduction
In this paper, I seek to argue out the prevailing negative perceptions of the Western world in regard to the rationale behind the Muslim women especially those in schools wearing the hijab. This study will therefore address the concerns that would help inform the Westernized societies on the reasons why female Muslim students wear hijab while others to not consider this wear (Cumper, & Lewis, 2008). This research inquiry therefore aims at arguing out the point that the Western Culture has immensely plaid a role in making the Muslim women think negatively about hijabs, a factor that has affected the manner in which this women view this religious wear.
Scope and Limitations
The primary participants in this inquiry are mainly limited to the Muslim students within different tertiary institutions of learning. The data set for this study will also be meaningful in the sense that it may not represent the wide range of Muslims from different contexts. This therefore means that it will only depict the diverse views on a common faith.
Plan of Development
Methodology
2.1 Participation
The targeted audience in this study will be based on 10 Muslim students of the ages between 18 and 30 since they currently are undertaking different fields of study in learning institutions across America. It is also essential to note that this Muslims have migrated from their countries of origin for the search of greener pastures in America, where there have been assimilated into the Western culture.
2.2 Methods of Data Collection
There are two sets of data collection approaches that will be employed: an open-ended-e-mail questionnaire that will be sent to the 10 Muslim students on their views in relation to hijab. Secondly interviews and observations will also be made on these students. The research will in this case be based on a qualitative approach that will incorporate both the questionnaires and interviews with the 10 female Muslim students within an institution of learning.
Literature Review
Currently, several debates in the concept of Muslim students wearing hijab to school have raised a lot of controversies. The Western world has always expected that the wearing of hijab would slowly fade since it has always been viewed as a back dated method of dressing that should be taken over by westernization and secularization (Cumper, & Lewis, 2008). However, in the Muslim society especially among the younger generation, the wearing of hijab is still considered an essential, with this resurgence strongly advocated for by the fathers of this religion.
Hijab as seen by the Western culture symbolizes a clash of different cultures that are strongly supported by the Islamic extremism coined with the 21st century terrorism. However, in other Islamic states such as Afghanistan, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, the full covering of a woman face also known as burqa remains a compulsory element (Eid, 2015). This has therefore received a hostile response from the western world that has seen this religious apparel banned. The Muslim students in this case have always been considered by the Western media as veiled victims who are in dare need of liberation since they lack the free...
