The African Americans relocation to the North during the Great Migration occurred at the turn of the 20th century up until the 1920s as members of the minority group in the South sought refuge from the widespread oppression in the former. Racial discrimination perpetuated by Jim Crow laws that hindered the African Americans’ quest for quality life of freedom, equality, and justice across the diverse dimensions of society. Equality of opportunities and resources to better their lives by exercising their skills, talents, and experiences across the social, political, and economic dimensions of the American society was a common desire among the multitude of African Americans who relocated to the North from the highly oppressive South. The promise was far from actualization as their desires and aspirations were met with disappointments arising from the poor housing conditions, racial discrimination, and low wages witnessed in the North by the African Americans. Nevertheless, the disappointments gave birth to or rather reignited the African American’s desire to develop a strong sense of belonging and racial identity through diverse works of art and literature. An appreciation of the daily speech patterns used by and among the African American community emerged with African Americans’ renaissance, such as Langston Hughes in the American literature. Langston Hughes makes for one of the individuals from the African American community whose works of literature echoed the qualities of normal or daily conversations by and among members of the community. Hughes’ works as an author, poet, and autobiographer stemmed from personal observations of the community’s way of life and struggles to emancipate itself from the shackles of oppression hindering its people from embracing its unique identity as the blacks or African Americans. Langston Hughes also sought inspiration from other individuals from the world of arts and literature. Provided herein is an evaluation of the influence of some of the renowned writers on the works of Langston Hughes across the diverse genres of literature.
