Should Steroid Era Baseball Players Get Into the Hall Of Fame?
Introduction
There is still controversy on steroid era baseball players who set records and accomplished much during this time. For instance, Barry Bonds slammed the 756 career homers to set a record, but doubts surrounding use of steroids clouded celebration of this milestone (Sheinin). As such, the debate surrounding the records set during the steroids era still divide opinion, to the extent that there are those who view these records as being illegitimate. Similarly, questions surrounding these records have led to calls for them to be placed with an asterisk. The involvement of Congress on steroids use in baseball was out necessity as the Major League Baseball was viewed to be slow to deal with problem. This paper supports the argument that steroid era baseball players should not get into the hall of fame, it also highlights on counter arguments.
Argument
In order to avoid voting people with tainted past having used steroids, the rules should be clear that only clean baseball players are eligible for the Hall of Fame. Supporters of players who have been suspected to have used steroids state that voters make the ultimate decision and may be biased against great players with tainted pasts. Nonetheless, in order to ensure that players have a level playing field then drug cheats should be excluded. Steroids era suspected baseball players typically receive low votes because of their choices and not because the voters are biased. It sends the wrong picture to current and aspiring players that one should win at all cost.
Even though, there was an era in which some anabolic steroids were not banned, those using them had an unfair advantage. As such, recognizing these individuals would be akin to recognize drug cheats. Using performance enhancing drugs was the easy way out for the players to get an unfair advantage over other players. In cases where there is evidence of steroids use, then it is unfair to taint the image of the Hall of Fame by leaving out exceptional players from eras where there was no widespread use of steroids. The drug cheaters are still frauds even when they were not caught, and the steroids era was characterized with impressive performance in comparison to prior eras. It cannot be ruled out that some of the big performers did not use drugs, and as such it would be unfair to consider such players for induction Essentially, the players from the steroids era should not be in the Hall of Fame as this would be rewarding those individuals who may not have been admitted or caught using steroids.
There are players who put a lot of effort to improve their game without using short-cuts and subsequently got inducted into the Hall of Fame. Induction should be based on achievements as recognition of effort, determination and self-drive, and should not be seen to reward cheats. Baseball requires hard work and practice for one to succeed, and it is a disgrace to reward those who were celebrated during the steroids era.
