Introduction
In this paper, I will talk about Alice Walker’s personal and professional life, as well as about what inspired her to write novels, poems, and short stories. The Color Purple is one of her finest books to date. This epistolary novel was released in 1982, followed by Possessing the Secret of Joy in 1992. Prior to that, Alice Walker came up with Meridian in 1976. In this particular novel, she talks about modern civil rights movements. Most of her stories take place in rural areas, and Alice Walker has always tried to address social and economic issues through her works (Mcmahon 107).
Question:
Where did Alice Walker grow up from?
Answer:
Born in February 1944, Alice Walker is one of the most famous American novelists, activists, and poets. In 1982, she rose to prominence with the success of her novel titled The Color Purple, for which Alice received several prizes and awards including one Pulitzer Prize and one National Book Award. Her full name is Alice Malsenior Tallulah-Kate Walker, and she was born in a small town of Eatonton, Georgia (Lauret 201).
Her parents, Minnie Tallulah and Willie Lee Walker were sharecroppers. For several years, Alice Walker’s mom worked as a seamstress in order to earn some extra money to raise her children. Alice was their youngest child who got admission at a local school at the age of four. She was not from a high-profile family or town. In fact, Alice’s parents used to live a simple life and did a lot of work to support their family financially (Chase-Riboud 857).
At the age of 8, Walker received a serious injury in an eye. Unfortunately, her parents had n access to a vehicle, so Alice could not receive medical assistance. It should be noticed that her right eye was blind because of that incident. At the age of 14, one of her eye tissues was removed, but its mark is still there. Today, this mark is considered a sign of beauty and grace (Mcmahon 109).
Question:
How is her educational background and when did she start writing?
Answer:
Years ago, the schools and colleges in Eatonton used to be segregated. Alice Walker’s parents sent her to a high school of blacks to help her continue her studies without any issue. In 1961, after completing her studies at Butler-Baker High School, she got admission in Spelman College and received a scholarship due to her brilliance and intelligence as a student. Professors Staughton Lynd and Howard Zinn motivated Alice Walker to work hard and show good performance at the college (Ensslen 284).
Two years later, she received a second scholarship which was from New York’s Sarah Lawrence College. In her college days, she got pregnant and had an abortion given that her parents would never permit Alice Walker to give birth to a baby at such a young age. Her time at Sarah Lawrence College was quite tricky as Alice had to face numerous financial and physical problems. To support her studies, she was getting financial assistance, but could not fulfill her other requirements, so she chose to write sh...
