A Doll’s House
Written by Henrik Ibsen, A Doll’s House is a three-act play that was premiered in December 1879. It was set in a small Norwegian town and has gained tremendous popularity due to its unique story and dramatic character portrayals. The play primarily deals with the destiny of a young lady who, after her marriage, faces many problems as her husband is not as cooperative and loving as he should be. The main characters of A Doll’s House are Nora, Torvald Helmer, Krogstad, Mrs. Linde, Dr. Rank, Bob, Ivar, and Emmy. They have contributed to the success of this play, but the protagonist of this play is far better than other characters (Danger 106).
Nora is the leading character in A Doll’s House. She married to Torvald Helmer a few years ago and is not happy with her marital life. Initially, Nora looks like a lady who is dominating by nature, but the fact is entirely different. She has not seen the world outside her house and lacks sufficient knowledge about her city. She dreams of becoming successful but is already pushed behind the race by her husband. With the passage of time, Nora loses her interest in the worldly things and starts focusing on the education and health of her children. However, her severe condition urges Nora to step out of her house and struggle for her rights. It looks like without Nora Helmer, the concept of A Doll’s House could never be understood by a large number of people (Andersen 93).
Torvald Helmer is Nora’s husband who has just joined a new office. He is fond of treating his wife like a child and tries to dominate her all the time. Torvald seems to be in love with teasing and irritating his wife. In general, he is concerned about his status and place in the society and does not let his emotions or love for his family overrule him. At a point, his wife feels that she should tell him about what he owes her. However, Nora stops herself from doing so and says "how painful and humiliating it would be for Torvald, with his manly independence, to know that he owed me anything." (1.197) It looks like she wants him to be happy even though Torvald’s treatment with his wife has never been appreciable (Tufts 141).
The third main character of A Doll’s House that contributed to its success is that of Krogstad. He appears as a contradictory person who holds a good position at Torvald Helmer’s office. Most of his wrong deeds have stemmed from his desires to save his kids from scorn. Krogstad does not feel shy when it comes to trying wrong and stupid tactics with an aim to achieve his goals. It looks like without Krogstad, A Doll’s House could never be completed since he is the person Torvald get an inspiration from of how to be rude to his wife and take her for granted. How tired Nora is from her husband can be known from the fact that she refuses to have sex with him. In response, the husband says “you must be joking my Nora, you will not? Am I not your husband?” (3.143) From this statement of Helmer, it is evident that just like Krogstad, sympathy has gone from his life and that is why he frequently abuses his wife and taunts her for no particular reason.
