This essay presents a critical assessment of an interview by Sean Lyn-Jones to Vipin Narang on an article authored by Narang titled, International Security: how States Pursue Bomb. This essay expounds on the four key strategies that states can employ in pursuit of developing nuclear weapons.
The States have four alternatives upon which to choose a suitable strategy for developing nuclear weapons. They include nuclear hedging, sprinting, sheltered pursuit, and hide. Nuclear hedging involves a state where a country silently acquires the pieces necessary to develop a nuclear program so that at its own pace, it can combine the pieces to form the nuclear weapons. For example, Japan is cautiously developing a titanium weapon program; hence, if it loses protection from the United States or when its threats become a reality, it can readily assemble nuclear weapons.
