The Metamorphosis
Family settings play significant roles in the lives of all their family members. Notably, the individuals in a family cannot be equal in aspects such as financial status. While some people may have substantial income sources that can eventually sustain their families, others may have little or nothing since they may not be working. On the other hand, some family members may opt to give up everything in their lives for the sake of their families. Although the idea is excellent, it creates dependence where all the people in the setting look upon the specific person for providence. However, most people in their human nature do not appreciate the effort by a family member sacrificing everything for their sake. Thus, they may not care for them as desired if they needed help, despite their continued effort to support their families. Kafka’s Metamorphosis reveals a correlating incidence whereby Gregor is almost useless to his family after losing his human nature into becoming an insect. Although the transformation is horrific to the family, their primary issue concerning his existence is that he can neither help himself nor the family. Therefore, families, especially in the modern era, are not held together by aspects like the unbreakable bloodline and patience with one another as humane individuals, but by the healthy relationships enjoyed in physical and mental wellness.
When Gregor wakes up in an insect form, life around him changes as even his immediate family gives up on him. They probably appreciated him in the specific physical form he just lost. In this case, they cannot treat him as usual because he is not the Gregor they were used to living with, as a human being. Their non-tolerance nature raises significant arguments. They do not even want to live with Gregor anymore. For instance, Gregor’s sister, Grete, suggests that they should not continue living with him. She says, “I will not utter my brother’s name in front of this monster, and thus I say only that we must get rid of it” (Kafka, 84). Grete insists to the parents that they must get rid of Gregor because she could not stand the insect’s sight in her brother. She believes that the family can only solve the problem by eliminating Gregor. According to Ramya (168), Grete emphasizes they should get rid of the idea that the insect is Gregor to their father, showing that if the parents listen to her, they will eliminate their son. The idea shows that she no longer believes that Gregor exists.
Although Gregor is part of the family, his significance in the family may be directly proportional to participation in providing for the family. He is essential as long as he can provide. However, his family did not understand what he went through while trying to make ends meet to take care of their needs consistently. ‘“O God,” he thought, “what a demanding job I’ve chosen!
