A Doll’s House
Introduction
We live in a male-dominating society where women are pushed behind the competition and often ignored by their family members and friends. Some ladies manage to survive in these uncertain situations and tolerate everything silently, while the others choose an entirely different path for themselves. In A Doll’s House, a three-act play by Henrik Ibsen, the same concept has been revealed. It is one of the most remarkable plays in the history and was premiered in the 18th century (Johnston 312). Since then, A Doll’s House has gained lots of popularity and is appreciated for its unique storyline. A housewife, Nora, is tired of her husband, Torvald Helmer. He keeps on irritating her in one way or the other. Finally, the young lady leaves the husband and her children behind and moves on. The most prominent and remarkable characters are Nora, Torvald Helmer, Emmy, Bob, Ivar, Mrs. Christine Linde, Krogstad, and Dr. Rank. In this paper, I will describe how all of these characters have contributed to the success of A Doll’s House (Cima 477).
Nora Helmer
The most important and powerful character of A Doll's House is that of Nora Helmer. This young lady tied the knot with Torvald Helmer some years ago and had three children with him (Emmy, Bob, Ivar). Even when she has spent a big part of her life with Torvald, Nora is not satisfied and wants freedom. At a glimpse, we may feel that Nora is happy, but she is tired of the rude behavior and taunts of Mr. Helmer. For the sake of her children, Nora tries her best to adjust with Torvald, but things do not go as planned, so she decides to file for a divorce. During her time in the house, Nora keeps herself busy and does not think of going outside. In the early years of her life after marriage, the lovely lady tries to please her husband in one way or the other (Devaull 276). She even hides some truths from him stating "how painful and humiliating it would be for Torvald, with his manly independence, to know that he owed me anything. It would upset our mutual relations altogether." (1.197) Nora’s intentions are not wrong; she wants to maintain peace and harmony in her house. In the meantime, she has no idea of how the world looks like. Maybe, she has lost her interest in the materialistic things and is more into taking care of her children. She wants the best for them, but her severe condition urges this lovely lady to find her happiness and fight for her rights. Without Nora Helmer, A Doll's House could never be an accomplished story (Glytzouris 12).
Torvald Helmer
Torvald Hemler is proud of his new job at the bank. He feels that the success will always knock his door no matter what he does or thinks. He is an arrogant man who is never ready to accept his mistake. Whenever Torvald returns home from the office, he does things that irritate Nora. For example, on one night, he forces his wife to have sex with him even when she is not in the mood. In anger, Torvald says “you must be joking my Nora, you will not? Am I not your husband?” (3.143) It looks like he is crazy for money as well as habitual of having sex, but is not ready to respect his wife in the way she deserves (Cim...
