The Research Paper Guidelines and Rubric:
A research paper is created in stages, and those stages need to follow a particular order to get the project completed.
*The Assignment:
Write a research paper on the topic of your choice in four-to-five pages including the works cited page (the body of the paper must be at least three full pages), and participate in related activities as described above for a possible 25 points for Module 3. The outline and rough draft are based on pass/fail (submit or non-submission) for 5 points. The final draft of the paper is evaluated on your ability to develop and introduce a thesis statement, support that thesis in the body of the paper by explaining and defending its points, and demonstrate unity and focus while writing meaningfully about your topic (for a possible 10 points).
*Keep in mind the following when creating your thesis statement:
1. A thesis should not state the obvious; for example: the ocean appears to be blue. That is simply a statement of condition with nothing to argue or defend.
2. Once you create a question about the topic, you have a something to work with; for example: Why does the ocean appear to be blue? However, the paper would only be an explanation of a fact or a definition essay.
3. If you answer that question with something such as, The ocean is blue for the same reason the sky is blue. Now you have a theory, which is a statement of belief or statement of thesis (idea or opinion).
4. If you set out to defend that statement, you will find that it is not exactly true. In that case, you might change your thesis statement to, The ocean's appearance of blue is not for the same reason as that of the sky.
5. Now you have a solid thesis statement that contain parts, which act of a blueprint or roadmap: 1) the sky's appearance of blue, 2) the apparent blue of the ocean, and 3) the relationship between them. One you have explained the reasons behind those issues and backed them up with authored, credible resources, you have defended your thesis argument. You will have drawn a conclusion such as, while there is a relationship between the blue appearance of the sky and that of ocean, the reasons behind them are unique to each.
6. A thesis should be balanced. That thesis statement contain three parts, and the paper should give each one somewhat equal support. The explanation and defense of why the sky appeared to be blue, the explanation and defense of why the ocean appears to be blue, and the relationship between them.
*Writing, Revising, and Finalizing:
1. Organize your paper:
- Give your essay an interesting title.
-Use the introduction to pull your readers into the topic and your thesis argument. The thesis statement should be organized in a way that will act as a blueprint or roadmap to the body of the essay.
