Chinatown in NYC
Walking in the New York’s Chinatown streets, I was able to see that a majority of the population were Chinese. From the dressing to the language, the foods and the streets full of Chinese signs, nearly everything in Chinatown spoke of the dominance of the Chinese people in this neighborhood. In terms of language, I noticed that local dialect particularly Cantonese and Fuzhouese were commonly used on the streets even though several others from all over China were used too. The most interesting thing about New York’s Chinatown is that despite most of its population having stayed in the United States for more than a decade, only a handful of them do speak English. In this paper, I look into the views of some Chinese people on why they chose to come to the United States and how the experience has changed their mentality so far. Overall, the search for employment led to the new Chinese immigration while racial discrimination against this group has contributed to their change in mentality about the Unites States.
Chinatown in New York City is a neighborhood located in Lower Manhattan. I managed to make an observation of a number of streets including, Lafayette, Mulberry, Center, Pell and Bayard. Geographically, Tribeca, the Civic Center, the Lower East Side and Little Italy surround Chinatown. Exquisite is the word that describes my first impression of Chinatown from my first visit there. Personally, I think Chinatown was the coolest place I ever visited especially with its unique cuisines, architecture, family-owned restaurants and souvenir businesses and buildings. I visited Chinatown at 10 o’clock on Wednesday when the neighborhood is usually lively. Various people were involved in different activities such as driving to work, shopping for groceries, street entertainment or just walking down the streets in singles and in pairs. At that time of the day, the restaurants were already full with people engrossed in enjoying the famous Chinese cuisines. It was common to see Chinese people interacting at great length with those from their own race while the communication was minimal with the other races. This, I attributed to the fact that many do not know English very well and prefer their local Chinese dialects. With the Chinese people occupying the greatest space in Chinatown, it was common to see them located in one place as a group. There were many interesting places and sites to see including the Columbus Park, the historic Museum of Chinese in America, the Mahayana Buddhist Temple, The Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory and the famous Jing Fong Restaurant. The Canal Street is a hotspot for tourists and therefore it had heavy traffic. The streets are small and winding, which means a lot of time is taken just to access the Chinatown in New York. A majority of buildings have pagodas and tiled roofs that are Asian-inspired. Chinatown has public, private and culturally specific schools such as New York Chinese School, Yung Wing Elementary School and Transfiguration School among many others.
