The purpose of this paper is to concisely analyze two works of art by the same artist from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art or Museum of Modern Art in concert with a reading of an excerpt from the artist's writings. Choose one theme or aspect of the artist's work that appears both in the works of art and the writings to make a broader statement about the artist's perspective, development and/or his own time. This will entail both formal analysis and research. In addition to the artist's writings (found through links/PDFS on LMS) you must also consult at least one (but ideally two) PRINT sources (or one print and one online article found on JSTOR, for instance) Suggestions that can be found in the Pratt Library are listed below. Read all instructions carefully and completely before you begin!
Lastly, if you dislike ALL of these options and have another artist (set of works and writings) you would prefer to use as a paper topic please do not hesitate to propose to me. BUT… remember you must have the alternate topic approved by me, the professor, before you submit the paper.

Paul Cezanne’s The Card Players Vs Still Life with Apples and a Pot of Primroses

Paul Cezanne is considered to have inspired modern art. The painter detested the homogenizing influence of modernism that had taken a toll on the people of Provence (Sidlauskas 94). Instead, the artist decided to develop a different style that would clearly portray the heritage of Provence (Athanassoglou-Kallmyer 103). More so, Paul Cezanne was fascinated by the natural perception of nature. Cezanne was concerned about solidity in the paintings. Majority of the art painted by Paul Cezanne are inspired by the artist’s history and memories from experiences as well as landscapes. Most artists who emerged in the same period as Paul Cezanne were determined to bring out their pieces in ways that would shape the future. Paul developed a unique form of building with the use of color and this approach has fascinated many modern artists. During Paul’s time, the tonal variations and contrast were important in paintings due to the fact that impressionism was prevalent. Paul’s perception of the importance of solidity was also portrayed in the letters written to Bernard.

The Card Players and Still Life with Apples and a Pot of Primroses are some of Paul Cezanne’s masterpieces that portray the artist’s use of color, composition and perspective to portray the actual perception of objects in his paintings as seen by the human eye. The artworks share similar characteristics in the way the artist was able to attain durability, solidity and structure through the brushstrokes. In Paul’s letter to Bernard, the artist explains to Bernard the need to imagine nature as three-dimensional. In the letter, Paul tells Bernard to “treat nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere and the cone, all placed in perspective, so that each side of an object or a plane is directed towards a central point” (Kleiner). Paul’s description portrays that he valued the complexity of human visual perception and struggled to portray the same in his paintings.
