Comparison and contrast of Alcoholic Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous
‘One day at a time,’ is one of the most commonly utilized slogans by individuals participating in various recovery programs such as Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) from substance abuse. The programs bring together millions of people worldwide and about 21.5 million Americans according to the American Addiction Centers (American Addiction Centers). The slogan helps individuals struggling with substance abuse understand that they need to focus on the present and treasure their lives. The two internationally recognized organizations carry out programs aimed at helping people suffering from life and mind-altering substance addiction, bringing out their similarities and differences through their history and implementation of their programs.
Firstly, the history of both the Alcoholic Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous differs and links them. AA refers to a worldwide organization that came into existence in 1935 in Akron, Ohio. According to the Alcohol Rehab Guide, Bill Wilson, the founder of the Oxford self-help group founded the organization and with the help of Dr.bob Smith, the two designed it to offer assistance to former alcoholic dependent individuals so that they could successfully stop abusing alcohol and attain sobriety (Carol). Narcotics Anonymous, on the other hand, according to the Narcotics Anonymous World Services refer to an international community-based organization that came into existence in 1953 to assist both men and women recovering from drug addiction to remain clean. Jimmy Kinnon founded the organization and based it in California (Narcotics Anonymous World Services). Nevertheless, the two organizations are similar in that their primary aim is to aid people struggling to stop the use of substances that alter a person’s normal functioning.
