Name: Tutor: Course: Date: Social Disjuncture in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie`s Half of a Yellow Sun Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie`s Half of a Yellow Sun is an award-winning four hundred and fifty-page novel about two sisters, Kainene and Olanna, during the Nigerian Biafran War that occurred between 1967 until 1970. During the early 1960s, the book`s main characters are introduced: Odenigbo, who frequently entertained intellectuals in order to discuss the political turmoil that was ongoing in Nigeria;Ugwu, a 13 year old boy from the village who moved in with Odenigbo in order to work as his house servant. Life changed for UgwuasOlanna,Odenigbo`s girlfriend, moved in with them. Olanna had a twin sister, called Kainene. Her lover was Richard,an Englishman who had come to Nigeriato study the arts. The story jumped ahead four years, to the period when trouble was brewing between the Igbo and the Hausa people, an event where hundreds of people died in massacres, including but not limited to Olanna's beloved uncle and auntie. The Igbo created a new republic, which was called Biafra. As a result of this conflict, Ugwu, Odenigbo, Olanna and their daughter Baby were forced to flee Nsukka, which was the central university town as well as the major cerebralcenter of this new country. The group finally ended up in Umuahia, the refugee town, where they greatly suffered as a result of food shortages as well as the paranoid atmosphere and constant air raids. This part of the novel includes several allusions to severalpast conflicts that happened between Richard and Kainene,Olanna and Kainene, and also Olanna and Odenigbo. The novel jumped back into the early 1960s, where we learned that Odenigbohad slept with a village girl, who had then had his baby. Furious at his betrayal, Olannawent ahead and slept with Richard duringone moment of weakness.
