Introduction and Status of Cloning in America
Cloning is an artificial form of reproduction that allows scientists to produce genetically identical species in a large number. So far, this method has been used to produce various animals, bacteria, plants, and fungi. J.B.S. Haldane was the first to introduce the idea of cloning (Green 2014).
Cloning has always been the subject of controversies in the United States. Since the production of Dolly, a large number of mammals and birds have been cloned. However, the process is considered unethical and immoral especially when scientists talk about human cloning. Those opposed to human cloning claim that this would be a big threat to the society. For instance, if a scientist employs the procedure to produce genetically identical babies, then various parents may stop worrying about pregnancy and hire him to produce artificial babies in the laboratory. Different countries have already passed laws to ban cloning. However, the United States has no such law (Nambisan 2017).
Congress decided to introduce some bills years ago, but officials have not yet decided at what stages cloning should be banned. Policymakers across the country believe that the artificial development of embryonic cells is out of context and that the implantation of a cloned embryo into the womb is unethical. Despite these concerns, experts still claim that cloning is valuable and can shape the future of humanity (Green 2014).
Teaching Cloning in the United States
According to Padma Nambisan, research cloning contradicts various principles of medical ethics. But cloning is happily taught at different colleges and universities in the United States considering that this can benefit a large number of families in a long-run. Different cloning-related methods and techniques are taught to students in zoology and botany classes, and the focus has always been to offer knowledge about growth, development, breeding, and exploitation of plants and animals (Nambisan 2017).
