Adeimantus wonders how in the world Socrates considers creating a city that does not constitute things that make life worthwhile: gifts, wealth, parties, etc. According to Adeimantus, lacks of these luxuries make life difficult for a ruler. He cannot comprehend the happiness in guardians. On the other hand, Socrates perceives that their intention is to create a city that will make most of the people living there happy rather than targeting a small group: a utilitarian leadership. He creates comparison of this case with building of a statue. He says, “The most beautiful color in the world is purple. So if our intention were to make the statue’s eyes as beautiful as possible, we would paint them purple. Since no human being has purple eye, this would detract from the beauty of the statue as a whole, so we do not paint the eyes purple” (432). We must remain focused on every party in the society in order to create the best for all. Socrates notes that there is no happiness guarantee that could make guardians feel anything more than guardians. The county duty is therefore among their highest ranks and virtues.
