Fredrick Douglass presented the speech as a challenge and criticism of the celebrations of Independence Day. The address is a criticism of the festivities on July 4th. Although the celebrations were centered on the ideals of equality, freedom, dignity, and pursuit of happiness, many negroes never had an opportunity of enjoying them. It was ironic that the American people were celebrating this day while many of its citizens were denied this fundamental right.
