Gender Quotas
The article in the Economist is titled “Are gender quotas good for business?” and was published on September 3rd, 2018. The article evaluates whether a recent bill approved by the California Senate is good for business. The bill requires public companies headquartered in the state to have at least one woman in their boards at the end of 2019, and at least forty percent by the end of 2021. Some leaders in the business world are skeptical about the law and are threatening to appeal. I find the article interesting because the issue of gender quotas and equality has been a subject of debate not just in the business but also in other areas like politics.
The article evaluates the impact of the recent law passed by the California Senate and addresses the concerns raised. The approval of the bill means that California is on its way to becoming the first state in the country to have a gender diversity policy in public companies at board level. The idea first began in Norway in 2008 and had since been adopted by a dozen countries in Europe, including Belgium, Italy, France, Netherlands, Germany, and Britain. As a result, the number of women on boards in some of these countries has grown by four or five times.
Close to two-thirds of public companies in the state have less than two females sitting on their boards. Opponents of the quota policies argue that there are few women in upper management and implementation of the law would lead to inexperienced, token women filling board positions.
