The Year-Round School System
There is a never-ending controversy that wraps the educational systems, especially among educators and scholars. This makes it imperative for school administrators to choose between traditional and year-round schools. A traditional school is one that has fewer but longer breaks while year-round schools have more frequent but shorter breaks. Nevertheless, these two systems have the same number of school days. The question on which is the better system has long been a debate. With this, several research studies have proved that year-round schools are better since they can enhance students' overall well-being, thereby improving their academic performance (Weaver, Hunt, Rafferty, et al., 2020).
Merino (1983) states that year-round schools assist youngsters in concentrating on their academics more than the extra-curricular activities that can result in juvenile delinquency since the students have lesser time to indulge on activities that can lead to criminality such as bullying, whether physically, verbally, or through the internet (cyberbullying). This is supported by Sander (2010), who clarified that adolescents who have excellent academic achievements are less prone to commit crime and delinquency. He found out that failure rates are directly proportional to delinquency, while life successes can be considered as constructive factors, where around 80% of all juveniles and adults who violated the law have suffered an academic failure. Merino (1983) believes that year-round school calendars can decrease crime rates in a country. This evidence directs the government into focusing on the educational needs of the children of the future. The efforts of the government must be focused on public schools since Leone & Cutting (2004) revealed that the majority of juvenile delinquents entered public schools. This means that their growth and character development are mainly guided by public school teachers. These pieces of evidence can massively improve the educational system in the country.
Year-round schools also provide students more benefits through extra-tutoring and health insurance services. These privileges allow them the obtain a continuous input of knowledge, especially for students who are financially challenged (Finnie et al., 2019). This is because year-round schools can maximize available resources. Thus, reducing the expenses for the students and the school. For instance, all of the students can use the same materials within the school year as compared when there are long breaks, such as during summer vacations, where the materials are prone to breakage. This gives the students of the marginalized communities a silver lining. Therefore, these data are significant in understanding that the utilization of year-round schools can drastically decrease the dropout rates of financially-challenged individuals CITATION Han13 \l 1033 (Hanover Research, 2013).
Moreover, students may also fail to improve their capacities during summer breaks in the traditional school calendar, thereby favoring year-end schools since they provide better outcomes. This is because the momentum of the students will suddenly decrease right after the end of the schoo...
