Abstract
Education system around the world are varied for many reasons. There is a general acceptance that western education is better than other education system and it can be partly attributed to their dominance in international affairs. Chinese people have also sought to tap into the benefits of the western education and they have send their children to their learning institutions. This trend has taken root in china and more students each year go abroad for higher education. However, this trend comes with various advantages and a fair share of disadvantages that have been discussed in this research paper. The motives and results of this trend has also been evaluated to establish the core reasons and impact of pursuing western education as a Chinese. The pressures which come with studying in abroad are also elucidated in detail in a bid to explicate this trend and evaluate its value for the learner, parent and the society.
Introduction
Globalization and internationalization has led to increased cooperation between countries. Preparing students to meet the global challenges has prompted parents especially in China have preferred to take their children in western countries for advanced education. They take this action for varied reasons but lately it has become a trend. Chinese population has posed a huge challenge on quality of education, limited capacity to enroll new students, lack of competition mechanism, poor student-teaching relationship due to huge student numbers, difficulty in joining college, exposure to the advanced western culture, learning English and other foreign languages etc are among the factors parents consider. Though studying abroad is associated with many advantages, it also comes with many disadvantages. In 2006, there were about 134,000 Chinese students have studied abroad and in 2016, this number increased to 544,500 people(Statista). Why did this number suddenly increase that much? This research paper is centered on answering this question and the various advantages and disadvantages of studying in a foreign country.
Benefits:
The western developed countries education system is better than China's. Western education systems are well funded and their facilities more equipped. All the necessary equipment and tools to develop a learner centered education system are availed. it has been developed and modified through history to be learner centered and wholistic in preparing the learner for their career prospects. In china, our education system was imported from the west and it took a long time to be assimilated and fashioned to meet the needs of the Chinese. Secondly, it is still in development phase since china became a republic in the 20th century and it has been building the education system amid other industries necessary for economic and social development. Additionally, in China is a populous country and has a large number of students limited number of teachers. Teachers are unable to offer quality service to each child in large class settings. A typical class has more than the recommended number of students. These issues have collectively led to diminishing quality of china’s education system forcing so...
