As companies and countries migrate to online services the threats of inadequate cyber security have increased, as there is a high risk of cyber security hacks, attacks, cyber crime, and cyber terrorism. Companies suffer huge losses when their information is compromised and accessed by unauthorized third parties. Similarly, attacks on critical national infrastructure are a present threat that poses a danger to people as attacks get more sophisticated. The complexity of cyber security threats means that it is difficult to address them all, but adequate measures can be undertaken to reduce the risk of compromising online safety. Cyber security threats are more sophisticated and complex that there is a need for better cyber security measures.
Criminals can repurpose sophisticated hacking tools to launch cyber attacks against a country’s classified data and information. For instance, in 2017, hackers stole classified cyber weapons from U.S. spies and availed this information to other criminal operatives (Jones and Seddon). The threat posed by such transnational criminals’ shows that cyber security is vulnerable that anything connected to the internet or intended for online services can be compromised. Private companies involved in cyber security are valuable in reducing the threats of cyber crime, but national governments coordinate large scale operations and can influence cyber security measures The challenge for governments is how to stop further attacks, since hackers and criminals are increasingly working together to launch more sophisticated attacks (Jones and Seddon).
