Trans Media Criticism Paper Assignment Instructions Queer and Trans Literature—Fall 2019 Value: 20% of your final grade Length: 3-4 pages (double-spaced, excluding works cited) Due Date: Wednesday, November 13, by 3:00 PM (submit via Blackboard) This medium length paper asks you to critically assess a piece of media coverage about trans and nonbinary people that you suspect is problematic. The goal is to apply the concepts and critical analysis skills we have developed this semester on a topic of your choosing. You will also continue to develop the writing skills you have been practicing in your culture critic papers, but this time the object of your analysis is not a cultural object, but media discourse. How to complete this assignment effectively: 1. Identify a trans and/or nonbinary issue that has been in the news lately that you are interested in writing about. 2. Find one news story, online post, or other short piece of writing for a public audience that is about your issue. It does not have to be professional journalism. 3. Write a 3-4 page paper in which you critically analyze how the media piece frames that issue and why it is problematic. In other words, what kind of discourse does it produce about this trans and/or non-binary issue? Your paper should have a clear argument. How to dissect a discourse (i.e. what does it say; how does it say it; what effect does it have?): • What assumptions is the article based in? I.e. assumptions about gender, or what trans people are/are not like. • Is it cisnormative? (see back to Serano for that term) • Does it contain seemingly inaccurate or false information? If so, to what end? • What do you see as the strategic goal of this piece of media coverage? That is, what is it trying to do with what it says? Recall the broader context of trans hypervisibility and anti-trans violence that we have been tracking this semester. Note: The only outside research involved here is finding your piece of media coverage. You may cite both the readings we have done this semester and/or our class discussions. How to cite a class discussion: paraphrase what we discussed and then, at the end of the sentence, put the class date in parentheses. I.e.: “The coincidence of trans women’s hypervisibility with political backlash is one of the defining characteristics of the past several years in the US (class discussion, September 9).” Citations: Please use MLA format in your writing and works cited list.

Trans Media Criticism.
The issue of discrimination against transgender and nonbinary people has been in the news lately. According to renowned scholars and numerous publications, prejudice against people who do not identify as exclusively male or female is a form of sexism. In the past four months, the media has covered, on a large part, the many problems that transgender and non-binary individuals face in their distinct environments such as their homes, workplaces, in public buildings and institutions, and even in public transport services. In the following study on the issue of discrimination against the selected groups, the literature review proved the hypothesis that some online media entities view matters related to the LGBTQ in a straight person's perspective.
A blog post by "The Conversation," an online educational platform for journalists, titled "What states that don't protect LGBTQ workers from discrimination have in common," will be under review in this paper. The paper addresses the issue of employment discrimination for individuals who have identified as LGBTQ. It states that employees who identify as belonging to the community and who work in at least 17 states of the United States that do not protect their employees from the various forms of employment prejudice in the workplace. The article also states the level of assortment of the protection of employees who are members of the LGBT community exemplifies in several ways to the states that accepted same-gender marriage in 2015 (Hines 1). Nevertheless, the post states that even so, protections of employees on basis of sex vary significantly from state to state. The post then continues to outline the things that countries that do not offer employment protections to transgender and nonbinary people have in common, specifically in terms of discrimination costs, the specific states, and many other features.
On the notion of employment discrimination, the post says that some states in the United States argue that according to the law, it is acceptable to mistreat and even fire an employee just for publicly identifying themselves as transgender and/or nonbinary. The information is seemingly wrong because, although transgender and nonbinary employees are not protected by the federal law, the Trump administration ruling has not yet been approved and passed. This is about the August 16 written brief that stated that it would be legal to fire transgender and non-binary employees based on gender. The brief has bee...
