MEDIA REPORTAGE IN THE NETWORK ERA
Please write an essay of at least 4 pages (typed, double-spaced, in times new roman 12-point font, and respecting MLA format for layout and citation of sources) I've chosen this following topic: 22 October 1962 (In response to the discovery of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, President Kennedy orders a U.S. naval blockade of the island.)
Each student will be assigned a historical event that took place in the world during the period from 1960 to 1989, and was considered by major media outlets to have been immediately news-worthy. Daily newspaper subscriptions remained high in this period, yet this is also the period in which most Americans began to rely on broadcast media (particularly network and local television newscasts) for information about late-breaking events. On the other hand, this periodization culminates immediately prior to the introduction of the World Wide Web, exists well before the mass distribution of camera phones and widespread digital crowd-sourcing, and takes place in an era without multiple competing 24-hour cable news networks. 
The object will be to locate and analyze a single news report about the assigned historical event. This can be either a print source or an audio or video recording of a broadcast source. The report must be completely contemporaneous with the event itself; this means it must have been published or broadcast within one day of the event having taken place (absolutely no later than 24 hours after the event occurred). Establish the provenance of the source, as the news report itself should be the primary object of analysis in the paper, NOT the historical event upon which it focuses.
In the essay, first describe and define the news source as specifically as possible: Is it an article in a specific daily newspaper? Is it a particular network television newscast from that night? What was the reputation of the news source, if any? Second, analyze how the news report is framing the news event: What about the event does the report stress and why? Conversely, which elements of the event are not emphasized and why? In retrospect, are there facts relevant to the event that seem to be ignored by or perhaps even completely unknown to the news report? (This may require a bit of additional outside research) If so, what does this potentially reveal about the reporting practices used or the technological means of information-gathering employed?

Description of the news source
The news source is an article written in one of the daily newspapers published and circulated in eastern United States – The Philadelphia Inquirer. This news source is basically a daily newspaper that is published in the city of Philadelphia and has a high reputation in the state of Pennsylvania and the entire United States at large. It is recognized as among the most influential daily newspapers in the eastern U.S. (Gammage 1). The paper serves the metropolitan area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is one of the oldest surviving daily newspapers in America. This newspaper was involved in circulation wars during 2nd half of the nineteenth century as well as the early years of the 20th century. It has survived for long by continuously modernizing its equipment and plant, and by providing its readers with extensive coverage of the news (Gammage 2). The Philadelphia Inquirer is today the 15th largest newspaper in the country by circulation (Gammage 2). On October 22, 1962, the United States president appeared on TV to address the people about the Societ missiles on the island of Cuba. The president stated that a Naval blockade had been placed around the island for the purpose of preventing any further Soviet deliveries (Dobbs 7). The Philadelphia Inquirer effectively reported the event the following day 23, October 1962, the morning after the televised address of President JF Kennedy to Americans on the Cuban Missile Crisis (Gammage 4).

How the news report framed the news event
The article reports about the address made by President JF Kennedy on 22 October, 1962 with regard to the Soviet missiles in Cuba. It reported that on Monday, the previous day, the president appeared on TV and addressed American people as regards the Soviet missiles shipments to Cuba. The report went to state that President Kennedy informed Americans that a Naval blockade had actually been placed around the island of Cuba in order to stop any more Russian deliveries. The article also reported that President Kennedy stated that any nuclear missile that is launched into America from the island of Cuba would be seen as an attack on America by USSR and that the President demanded the missiles to be taken away from the island. Moreover, this article on The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the United States would sink defiant Soviet arms ships.
