Journal 4: In the Age of A.I.
Due Friday, May 1, 2020 (11:59 PM)
Format: .doc or .docx file to UBlearns
Length: 500 - 600 words, strict: don’t go over 600, no less than 500

In the Frontline documentary, In the Age of A.I., the producers provide a technical and sociopolitical critique of the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, examining its impact across a variety if sociopolitical concerns: global economic rivalry, corporate surveillance, the future of work, and the threat to democracy. At the heart of the discussion are issues related to the collection and control of our personal data, and further, how this information is utilized to profile, coerce, or otherwise control the public. Encouraging developments, such as the use of artificial intelligence to raise people out of poverty, improve public safety, and assist in the diagnosis of life-threatening conditions reveal how this technology can benefit humanity in ways we are just beginning to comprehend.
For this journal entry you need to take the time to watch the 2-hour documentary located here:

Considering the isolation we are currently enduring, which both flattens the curve of the COVID-19 epidemic while rendering us almost entirely dependent on The Stack (see Bratten, Week 12), we find ourselves interacting with artificially intelligent agents more now than ever. From tracking the movements of possible pandemic vectors (https://twitter(dot)com/TectonixGEO/status/1242628347034767361) to the use of bots to automatically scan, book and place your next Whole Foods/Amazon Fresh Delivery order (https://github(dot)com/pcomputo/Whole-Foods-Delivery-Slot), artificial intelligence and the big data that fuels it are in play this pandemic.
In 500 (not to exceed 600 words, strict), I would like you to do a quick and informal benefit/risk assessment in which you clearly state the pros and cons of artificial intelligence as you see it. What do you perceive as the most beneficial aspects of AI and, in turn, what are its greatest risks? Please provide examples either from the documentary or from online resources. If you find something interesting, include a link, otherwise there is no need to provide citations for this thought piece. (9 pts)
To sum up, provide suggestions for how society might promote the benefits of AI while also curtailing the negative application of this powerful tool. This might be done through passing laws, creating open source tools, a public education initiative, or some other creative endeavor you propose. (6 points)
As always, be concise and clear, but most of all, be honest in your assessment.

Benefits of A.I
* Improve public safety
Public safety covers a broad range of government obligations; from legislating to countering criminal activities. However, AI’s capability of preventing and responding to various crimes provides a unique way of establishing safer societies. The documentary implies that AI is used in image and facial recognition, detection of criminal behaviors, and analysis of criminal patterns beyond human capabilities. AI has also become an important tool in the analysis of dubious activities connected to terrorists.
* Diagnosis of life-threatening diseases
Although the constant mutation of diseases and viruses is troubling, the use of artificial intelligence has allowed health facilities to create new treatment programs that allow people to live longer. Unlike doctors who cannot multitask, machine learning algorithms combine medical results with symptoms and images to identify various diseases in the human body. From the documentary, AI does not just identify diseases, but also offers treatment suggestions for cancer and other chronic diseases.
* Employment opportunities
The various companies that deal with AI services and products provide employment opportunities for poor people in society. As a result, AI has been significant in reducing unemployment levels. However, this benefit is contentious because the documentary indicates that 50% of human jobs will be lost to AI in the next 15 years.
Cons of AI
* Loss of jobs
One of the major themes in the docu...
