Globalization in Saudi Arabia
The effect of globalization on Saudi Arab global culture is not an issue of simple reports and statistics. It is essentially, an indicative line of evaluation to consider its minuses and pluses on the Arab broad public. Globalization comprises of economic, social, and political changes that can embrace to personify their culture and integrate it with the world. It is theory that has its political, economic, and social roots and consequences. To a great extend, globalization endorses assimilation of the world and requires the elimination of all cultural borders. Even though globalization is an imperative process towards transferring education and knowledge to the world, it still has its unconstructive attempts on most civilizations and cultures. Its effect on cultures, in this instance, the Arabic culture, is comparatively controversial.
A number of cultural trustees and nationalists of the Arabic community, for example, criticize the effect of globalization on their culture. Conventional Arab fundamentalists and nationalists claim that their culture cannot hold on numerous globalized notions. For Saudi Arabians, any claim on the divergence is just a motivation to demean other cultures in support of a principal one, or an effort to certify the authority of one culture, mostly the contemporary version of western culture, over other cultures.
There are two core features that describe Saudi Arabia’s relations with the rest of the world: oil and Islam. In other words, one can say that Saudi Arabia has one leg in heaven and the other one on earth and cannot really decide on where it belongs. Saudi Arabia is the globe’s greatest oil producer and the greatest exporter. It also owns about ¼ of famous oil reserves. On the religious stand, it is the origin of Islam and the core of the Muslim world; Mecca. The captivating part of this information is that both Islam and oil are prime instances of globalization; a progression that produces a significant deal of resentment in the Arab nations, as it does other places. Globalization tends to be considered as a means of extending western influence although Saudi Arabia is itself a key player in globalization and also one of the motivating forces.
Saudi Arabians view both political and cultural forms of globalizations as Americanization. For the leaders, political globalization transforms into the peril of an open community, more democracy, and less hierarchy (El-Shibiny 61). Such notions do not go well in a community that does not hold elections and where kings can appoint their ministers as they please. For the regular Saudi, the possible loss of political authority of which they do not have much to start with, is not a big worry. They mostly view cultural globalization as intimidating to their faith and disheartening their morals.
